L I L, Hol, Eq I If Nu Le F Ick: Lonurn

This document discusses varying the frequency of a sine wave patch in Max. It describes how to change the frequency by clicking and dragging in the float number box or by directly typing a number. Frequencies below 100 Hz may not be audible on some systems. The document recommends directly typing frequencies to input them accurately and avoid out of range numbers. It then instructs opening a specific Max patch file that contains objects for generating and combining sine waves with variable frequencies.

Add a f lonurn to the patch (th e icon w ith the t riangle and t he litt le decimal
point) , switc h to performance mode, activate ezd a c- , and vary the fr equency
in t he fo llowing way: click o n t he float number box, and, holding the mouse
button dow n, slide t he mouse up to raise the fr equency or dow n to lowe r it.
If you click on the left part of t he float number box, you w ill be incrementi ng
or decrement ing the integer part of t he nu mber, wh ile if you click on the right
part, you wi ll be changing the fract iona l part of the number. A d iffe rent way to
modify the number in the fl o nu rn is to select the object with a click and then
to type numbers d irectly into it; w hen you t hen type <Enter> o r click away from
th e object, 19 t he number you typed w ill be input (figure 1.21).

A sine wave, having no harmonics, 2 0 is scarcely audib le at low freque ncies,

and because of th is, you w ill hear freq uencies below 100 Hz on ly if you are
using a good sound system o r headphones. If you are using the speakers built
into a laptop , you w ill on ly hear freq uencies above 100 Hz. To input accurate
frequenc ies quickly, and to avoid out-of- range numbers, click on the flonurn
object to select it (t he triang le on the left w ill change to yellow to indicate that
it is selected) and t hen type directly w ith th e keyboard

Now open th e f ile 01_02.maxpat (shown in fig ure 1.22).
