This document provides information about a band rehearsal for the piece "Dusk" by Steven Bryant at Wamego High School. The objective is for students to perform sections of the piece with an understanding of climax spots and appropriate control of dynamics and tone. The rehearsal plan involves playing through sections of the music while focusing on vertical alignment, musicality, communication between the conductor and ensemble, and ultimately performing the full piece. Assessment will be through aural observation and discussion between the director and ensemble.

Wamego High School
Teacher/Conductor: Elaine Snowden
Rehearsal: 7 Dusk by Steven Bryant Prior Knowledge/Skills: Experience with instrument in a band setting, most from the fifth grade. Experience reading sheet music and performing with the range and technical skills of the program’s high school band. There have also been previous rehearsals on this piece. Rehearsal Objective: Students will perform Dusk with an understanding of climax spots following tension and release in the music. Students will then use this understanding to appropriately control their dynamics and tone. Students will also perform these measures with accurate counting from start to finish. Assessment of the Rehearsal: Aural observations by the director(s) and verbal confirmation from the ensemble through discussion between the director and ensemble. Relevant Context Factors: Ensemble struggles to focus on counting beats in a measure, this is apparent throughout changes in time signatures. They understand building tension towards the point of release in music but can work on accuracy in entrances and exits. Modifications/Accommodations needed: The tempo can be played with during rehearsal depending on if students are struggling with counting, with hearing harmonic context, or reaching climactic points. Instructional materials, resources, & technology: Metronome Personal Improvement Objective: Clear conducting with a focus on change in time signatures, releases, and cuing entrances. Rehearsal Plan: Time Activity Purpose of Activity Sequence Assessment 1-3 32-47 Vertical Alignment -Students “bop” Aural observation their parts from 32-47 -Play through same place 4-10 21-47 Musicality -Play through 21-47 -Now audiate same part (what would this sound like if it was played by a professional symphony?) -Play again 11-13 Beginning-21 Communication -Play through 1- Discussion between ensemble 21 and conductor -Discuss conducting options with held notes and meter changes. (Was the communication there?) 14-15 1-47/end Tie in rehearsal 1-42/end (depending on time)
