A representative sample is to be obtained from each railroad car or truck containing reclaimed scrap.
These samples must contain the proper proportion of the light and heavy scrap and slag adhering scrap
contained in each car, as accuracy of the results obtained depend to a large extent on the samples used
for the test.
The samples taken from the railroad cars or charging boxes should be dried or contain less than .5%
moisture before being placed in a watertight container. The weight of the composite sample taken should
be determined before the water is added, and again weighed after sufficient water is added to fully
submerge the scrap. The water is added to displace the voids contained in the batch. (Do not measure or
weigh until bubbling has ceased.)
The weight of the water divided by 62.428 pounds per cubic foot will equal the cubic feet of water
contained in the box, and the total cubical content of the scrap and water (determined by actual
measurements), less the cubic feet of water, results in the cubical content of this scrap.
The theoretical weight of steel is determined by multiplying the cubic feet of scrap by the weight per cubic
feet of 430 pounds for the density of steel.
The difference in weight between the actual weight of the sample and the theoretical weight is divided
by the difference in weight per cubic foot of steel and slag, the result being the cubic feet of material other
than metal.
The metallic content is then determined by deducting the cubic feet of other than metal from the total
cubic feet of scrap in the box, the result of which is the cubic feet of solid metal, and which multiplied by
the weight per cubic feet of 430 pounds for steel, which is then divided by the actual weight of the sample,
results in the metallic content of the scrap.
Procedure
1. A watertight container should be used, the size of which should be sufficiently large to contain
scrap of maximum charging box size which is 3’6” (42”) wide, 5’6” (66”) long and 4’ (48”) deep
(inside dimensions) or about 77 cubic feet.

3. Because the actual cubic content of the box cannot be calculated using the length times width
times depth measurements, due to inside welds and distortion from handling, the average cubic
foot per inch of depth of box is to be calculated. First, measure the depth of the box at all four (4)
corners and divide by four. (4), to calculate the average box depth. Second, fill the box with water
and determine weight of water added. Third, calculate the average depth of water by measuring
down from top of box to the water at all four (4) corners and divide by four (4), then subtract that
figure from the average box depth. Fourth, to determine the cubic feet of water, divide the weight
of water per cubic foot (62.428). Fifth, divide cubic feet of water by average depth of water in
inches to determine the cubic foot per inch of depth of box. The cubic foot per inch of depth of
the box should be recalculated approximately once a year.
5. Determine gross weight of box and scrap contained by weighing on suitable scale.
6. Fill box with water, completely submerging the scrap contained in the box to at least one to two
inches.
7. Determine gross weight of scrap and water contained in box by again weighing on suitable scale.
8. Determine cubical content of the combined scrap and water in box by measuring from the water
level to top the box at each corner and use average of the four (4) corners subtract from average
depth of box. This figure then multiplied by the cubic foot per inch of depth (Step 3) equals the
cubic content of scrap and water in box.
9. Calculate the weight of the water and the weight of the scrap in the box from actual scale
weighing.
10. Calculate the cubic feet of water in the box by dividing the weight of the water contained in the
box by 62.428 pounds.
11. Calculate the cubic feet of scrap in box by deducting the cubic feet of water from the total cubic
feet of scrap and water.
12. Calculate the theoretical weight of steel by multiplying the cubic feet (11) by 430 pounds per cubic
feet.

13. Determine the cubic feet of other than metal in the sample by dividing the difference between
the theoretical and the actual weight of the sample by 270 pounds (430-160).
14. Calculate the metallic content of the scrap by deducting the cubic feet of other than metal (13)
from the total cubic feet of scrap in box (11) the result of the which is the cubic feet of solid metal,
and which, multiplied by the weight per cubic feet of 430 lbs for steel, and then divide that result
by the actual weight of the sample, the result being the metallic content of the scrap.
