14. Figure shows a spinner used in a game. The circular board is divided into eight equal sectors. Three
of the sectors are marked W for a win and five sectors are marked L for a loss. Mr Bayes decided to
play the game. He has at most three spins. To win the game two W's are needed. If he gets two W’s
with his first two spins then the game stops. Likewise, if he gets two L's with the first two spins the
game also stops as he cannot go on to win the game.
(a) Write down the probability that Mr Bayes’ first spin will result in a W.
(b) Calculate the probability that Mr Bayes will
(i) win the game after two spins.
(ii) lose the game after two spins,
(iii) win the game after three spins.
(c) Show that Mr Bayes is more than twice as likely to lose the game than he is to win the game.
