This document describes a lesson plan that uses an EdPuzzle video to teach 4th grade students about the phases of the moon. Students will watch an embedded video about moon phases and answer questions. They will then create diagrams using Microsoft Word showing the positions of the sun, moon, and Earth for the different moon phases. The teacher will assess student understanding through their responses to the video questions and moon phase diagrams. The use of the video and interactive technology allows students to engage with visual representations of the moon phases to enhance their comprehension of this astronomy concept.

Lesson Idea Name: Moon Phases – What we SEE from Earth!

Content Area: Science – Solar System/Moon Phases
Grade Level(s): 4th
Content Standard Addressed: S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of
the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth.

b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of the moon (new,
crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

EdPuzzle supports the universal design for learning in the following ways:
• Audio and visual components of the videos support visual and auditory learners
• EdPuzzle allows teachers to make voice overs and import videos from external avenues such as your
own DropBox or YouTube allowing videos to be translated to other languages and altered for diverse
learners
• The videos created using this software allow for easy playback which helps students who need extra
time to work at their own pace.
• The videos are very interactive for students and allow them to answer questions to test their
knowledge

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will notify students that they will be studying moon phases today. The teacher will begin the
lesson by asking students what they know about moon phases in order to asses their prior knowledge. The
students will turn to an elbow partner to discuss 1 thing they know, and the teacher will listen in on their
conversations. The teacher can choose to allow students to share with the class their response. Following, the
teacher will tell the students that they will be watching a video about the phases of the moon and prep them
for how they should go about answering the questions that are embedded in the video. The students can use
tablets to laptops to do this activity and the teacher can use an interactive whiteboard to do a live
demonstration and monitor the students progress.

Once the video is over, the teacher can choose to share an anonymous summary of the student’s responses
to the video questions. Afterwards, the teacher can discuss what the students have learned from watching
the video. When they are finished, the students will then use their laptops to create a online illustration of
the moon phases and a diagram showing the position of the sun, moon and earth for day and night. The
students can use Microsoft word to create these illustrations and diagrams being that there are so many
customizable features, text boxes and shapes. The students can then post their diagrams and illustrations on
the classroom blog. The teacher can use the responses to the questions and the projects they submit for
assessment.

Importance of technology:

For this project, the EdPuzzle video is essential to the project because it gives students a clear visual of the 8
different moon phases. Students can easily refer the video when creating their own illustrations and
diagrams. This is critical because student’s need s reference for application, therefore it is always good to
provide students with an example. Yes, the project could be completed without this technology. However, the
information shared within the video including the visuals, enhances the understanding of the topic for the
students. Without using it, the students would need to be given an alternative visual to what the moon
phases look like. The students would also be using Microsoft word, the classroom blog, their tablets and
laptops.

Inspiration (optional):

I used an existing YouTube video from SciShow Kids and Made up the questions to go along with the video. In
the future, I would find and learn to use an alternative video-making software and create an original vide for
students to use in the classroom.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

The possible issues surrounding internet safety and student privacy would be geared toward the use of the
EdPuzzle embedded YouTube video and the classroom blog. In regard to the YouTube video, it is possible that
Ads could be displayed on those videos that are not geared toward or appropriate for children. To minimize
the risks to the students, I would make sure that the channel the video is displayed on is labeled as a YouTube
channel made for kids, and that the audience is set to made for kids. Checking those boxes lets me know that
YouTube has that channel under compliance with the COPPA laws which would prevent ads from being
displayed on the video I use altogether. As far as the blog goes, I would be sure the monitor all of the students
projects and get permission from the parents involved to be able to display the work on the classroom blog
under password protection to make sure that only students, parents and teachers involved are able to view it.
I would make sure that no pictures of the students as well as any legal/identifiable information is displayed
that could potentially be exploited as well.

Reflective Practice:

Videos are a really great way to engage students in new content and EdPuzzle makes it easier for teachers t deliver
content to students while utilizing its student response system which gives direct feedback. These provide students with
high engaging, hands-on tasks that will help them to understand the reason why the moon “appears” to have different
shapes. Students should be able to walk away with the understand that even though the moon stays the same shape,
our perception of it changes based on the light from the son as it revolves around the earth. Teachers can test their
understanding based on the student’s responses to the questions from the video and the illustrations/diagrams they
turn in. To further extend the lesson, students can print out pictures and create flash cards to remember the names of

the different moon phases with information regarding what they represent. The students would use Microsoft and a
printer.
