Barstad Kyra Professional Activities Form 3
Your Name: Kyra Barstad Date of Activity: 3/31/20, 4/3/20 Faculty name: Kaylyn Bautista
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
I participated in the AACN COVID-19 Pulmonary, ARDS and Ventilator Resources course. This
course was designed as a means of enhancing or refreshing knowledge on pulmonary illness for
healthcare providers and students in wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. As a student taking this
course, I was able to refresh my knowledge on pulmonary illness, especially related to ventilator
use.
I also did two modules from The Science of Wellbeing course from Yale University. This course
was designed to help people understand what makes them truly happy and encourages students to
build routines that make them happier and more fulfilled people. My role as a student in this was
to watch lectures, read provided materials, and do small assignments like keeping a gratitude
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The Science of Wellbeing course modules also took me about 4 hours and was online.
The COVID-19 trainings are extremely relevant to me as a soon-to-be new graduate nurse who
will be in the clinical setting potentially caring for patients with severe respiratory and
pulmonary issues. Being able to go over some of the key components of nursing care for these
patients will benefit me when caring for patients in the future.
The Science of Wellbeing modules were extremely valuable to me because presently I am self-
quarantining and spending a lot of time inside at home without much activity or purpose. These
modules gave be a slightly better understanding of some of the things I can do to feel happier
during the day as well as how I can help others form healthier happiness habits, potentially even
in the clinical setting.
How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
The COVID-19 course will benefit me when caring for patients with pulmonary illnesses that
may be on ventilators in more high acuity settings. Reviewing ABGs, important assessment
findings, and ventilator and tracheostomy care through this course will continue to be relevant
throughout my career as a nurse.
The Science of Wellbeing provided me with not only information on ‘happiness myths’ and
things that bring true happiness, but also gave me a better idea of different activities I can do on a
regular basis to feel more content overall. I can take this information throughout my life and
apply it to increase my mental wellness at any point, especially if I am ever beginning to feel
burnt out as a nurse. Additionally, I can suggest happiness strategies to my patients should they
need them.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
I would recommend the COVID-19 trainings to any student nurse or registered nurse who wishes
to enhance their learning on pulmonary illnesses because it provides thorough but clear
information on essential nursing care practices.
I would recommend The Science of Wellbeing course to all adults who are looking for ways to
increase their overall life satisfaction and feel more grateful for what they have. The lectures are
clear and engaging and the assignments and quizzes are relevant and not too difficult. I felt like I
took away a lot from the two modules I did, and will probably continue on with the course in the
coming weeks.
