Wet Magnetic Particle Testing and Dry Magnetic Particle Testing
Wet Magnetic Particle Testing and Dry Magnetic Particle Testing
Definition
Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) or Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is one of the
most known nondestructive test for materials. It is used to detect flaws on both surface and
subsurface of the material, mostly on the ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and
some of their alloys. This test involves magnetizing the materials to produce a magnetic lines of
force or flux that will reveal the flaws that re not usually evident. MPT is a relatively fast and
easy test since the preparation of the degree of surface is not as critical as those in other
nondestructive test. It is one of the most used nondestructive tests for materials for its simple and
effective methods and is utilized in variety of applications. MPT has two classifications: Wet
Magnetic Particle Testing (WMPT) and Dry Magnetic Particle Testing (DMPT).
Procedure
1. Pre-cleaning: Fill a container with distilled water and an all-purpose cleaner in a 10:1 ratio;
Place the specimen inside the container; Place a container in an ultrasonic bath and fill it with
tap water up to the visible line; Turn on the ultrasonic bath and degas it for 5-10 minutes.
Once the degas in complete, place the specimen inside the ultrasonic cleaner; Set the sonics
for 10-15 minutes and press run to run sonics cycle; Rinse the specimen with distilled water
2. Applying Suspension (for WMPT only) : Place the specimen in coil; Spray gently the
5. Inspect the Specimen and Record the Observations. Inspect the welded parts and the large
areas.
6. Demagnitize. Turn the coil loosely; Energize the coil; Remove the coil and maintain a
