Design of Purlins

This document summarizes the design of purlins for a roof with a slope of 18.4 degrees and a span of 37.4 meters. It specifies design loads, material properties, and calculations to check the bending capacity of a C8x18.75 section. Calculations show the section has sufficient bending capacity (Mn) of 33.525 kN-m about the x-axis and 5.52 kN-m about the y-axis to resist the calculated bending moments of 1.72 kN-m and 0.77 kN-m respectively. Therefore, a C8x18.75 section is suitable for use as the roof purlins.

Specifications

a. Length of purlins
L = 37.4 m
b. Slope of roof
θ = tan-1 (2.5/7.5) = 18.4°
c. Inclined Length of Roof
Inclined length = √2.52 + 7.52 = 7.91 m
d. Purlin Spacing
Assuming 22 purlins will be used
S = 7.91/22 = 0.36 m
e. No of Lines of Sag Rod = 12
f. Roof Slope = (2.5/7.5)(100) = 33.33%
g. Tributary Area of Purlin = 0.34(5) = 1.7 m2

Loads Acting on the Roof Purlins:

Wind Pressure = 1.98 kPa x 0.36 m = 0.7128 kN/m

Roof Live Load = 1.0 kPa x 0.36m = 0.36 kN/m

Roof Dead Load = 0.05 kPa x 0.36m = 0.02 kN/m

Purlin Dead Load = 28.0 kg/m x 9.81 m/s2 = 0.275 knN/m

Total Vertical Load:

Total Vertical Load = 1.2D +1.6Lr + 0.5W

Total Vertical Live load = 1.2(0.02+0.275) + 1.6(0.36) + 0.5(0.7128)

Total Vertical Load =1.2864 kN/m

Loads that the purlin will carry:

Wx = Wind Load + Total Vertical Load cosθ

Wx= = 1.2(0.02+0.275)sin(18.4) + 1.6(0.36)sin(18.4) + 0.5(0.7128)

Wx = 0.65 kN/m

Wy = 1.2(0.02+0.275)sin(18.4) + 1.6(0.36)sin(18.4)

Wy = 0.29 kN/m
