Assignment # 5 (2020) New PDF
1- It is required to draw the storm hydrograph at station G for the shown basin if the base flow is
constant and equal to 260 m3/hr, the rainfall intensity is 25 mm/hr lasting for 6 hours :
Basin A B C D
Area km2 1.5 2.5 5.5 6.0
tc (hr) 0.5 1.5 1.5 1
tL (hr) 0.0 1.0 2.5 3.5
Run-off coefficient (C) 0.15 0.2 0.22 0.31
2- The time of concentration for a rectangular area (2 km x 1 km) is 30 min. The direction of overland
flow is parallel to the longest sides of the rectangular. Should one expect a greater peak rate runoff
from this area from a storm of intensity 120 mm/h of 12 min duration or from a storm of intensity
of 40 mm/h of 30 min duration? Why? Assume 85% runoff coefficient.
3- A rectangular parking lot 100m wide and 200 m long has an estimated time of concentration of
24 min. Of the 24 min concentration time, 18 min is required for overland flow across the
pavement to the longitudinal gutter along the center of the lot. A rain of 60 mm/h intensity falls
on the lot for 6 min and then stops abruptly. If the runoff coefficient is 0.88, determine the peak
rate of outflow past the gutter exit.
4- A watershed of 5 Km2 consists of three smaller sub-basins as shown in Fig. (1):
35% cultivated with conservation treatment - D soil group
30% meadow - B soil group
35% thin forest – good cover - C soil group
It is required to: Calculate the peak flow rate for the 4-inch storm water using the Weighted
Average CN technique. The time of concentration Tc = 35 min.
