The Evolution and Future of Wired Communications

Wired communications has been used for decades through technologies like telephone networks, cable television, and fiber optics. It provides better security, reliability, and speed than wireless due to direct physical connections but is more expensive and time-consuming to set up. Recent technologies combine wired and wireless features to leverage the advantages of both, such as fiber-wireless networks that offer high speeds through wired connections with wireless convenience. While wireless dominates mobile use, wired connections remain superior for speed and security and will provide stronger, more reliable connections in the foreseeable future.

The Evolution and Future of Wired Communications

Wired communications is the transmission of data over a wired base channel of

communication technology. Wired technology communications have been around for decades.
Some examples of this type of communication include telephone networks, cable television,
cable internet, and fiber optic communications.

Wired communications, as previously mentioned, has been in use for many years
because it has its advantages, but like all things, also have disadvantages compared to other
medium. This type of communications are known to have better security, reliability, and high
speed commnunication. Cabled or wired are more secure as it is received exclusively to the
points where a direct connection is achieved. They are also more reliable than say, wireless,
because interference or obstruction in wired communication is non-existent for as long as the
two end point of the wire are connected. Some disadvantages of wired communications include
multiple physical connections, higher expenses, and more time consuming. These
disadvantages go hand in hand because having a large number of required physical connections
directly means it would require more cables, more labor, and generally more money and time
consumed.

Wireless communications has been the trend for the past few years, especially with the
rise of Wi-Fi, bluetooth, among other wireless means of communication technology. In wireless
communications, information is transmitted through air, without using cables and wires,
through electromagnetic waves.

With the rise of wireless network technology, many companies in the

telecommunications industry are beginning to look at the future of wired internet technology
with a collaborative viewpoint. Some of the newest technologies, which combine wired and
wireless features, which include fiber - wireless networks, and a distributed antenna system. A
fiber-wireless system is a plan to combine both wired and wireless technology. It combines the
advantages and strengths, such as the convenience of having wireless networks and the speed
and reliability of the wired networks. A distributed antenna system makes use of radio – over –
fiber links to carry on and provide wireless broadband network access. The idea behind the
system is that a center unit, which remote antenna units connect to via optical fiber, receives
optical signals. These are then picked up by the antennas, which convert them without having
to process them. Because of this technology being available, future versions will further
combine wired and wireless network technology, which will also provide users with a faster,
smoother, and more stable experience.
While admittedly having drawbacks in terms of mobility, wired connections have always
been vastly superior to wireless in virtually every way. It generally offers faster and safer
connections,. They offer a direct and exclusive feed to a network, and don’t allow multiple
users to access it without prior permission from the owner. The wireless network technology is
still seen to dominate most of technological communications especially when mobile and
outdoors, However, wired ethernet cables will provide the stronger and more reliable
connections for the foreseeable future. Often, it’s smaller companies, as well as universities,
that contribute technologies that revitalize the industry. University College of London, for
example, developed fiber optic hardware that transmits data at more than one terabyte a
second. This kind of breakthrough could have a substantial influence on future advances in
wired broadband communication and networks.
