Handwashing Concept Note
Handwashing Concept Note
Background:
In the light of the coronavirus pandemic, key among protection measures and
means to slow down or stop the spread of coronavirus is hand washing with soap.
With no tap, it is impossible to wash hands. Sadly, In some parts of the
communities in Nigeria, knowledge around proper hand washing is low, and access
to proper hand washing facilities is lacking. We believe that the more accessible
water is, the more likely individuals are to wash hands with soap and water. Access
to necessary supplies can facilitate hand washing practice, and placement of such
supplies can serve as a reminder for people to wash hands. Accessible hand
washing infrastructures can make people 60% more likely to wash their hands
because with the evolving coronavirus pandemic, hand washing with soap can stop
the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
The UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 calls for universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene
globally by 2030, and Christian Fellowship and Care Foundation, is taking an active role in
working with local schools and communities to make this goal achievable through Hygiene
education project which focus on promoting good health practices and proper hand washing
techniques in the communities.
CFCF mission is to help eradicate hygiene related illnesses around the target communities, especially
during this unprecedented time as the case of COVID-19 continue to spread rapidly.
Purpose:
Our purpose is to help improve the health and well-being of children and adults living in hygiene
poverty in South East of Nigeria. This project seeks to educate and empower the next generation
to wash their hands, create the hand washing habit through the provision of portable hand
washing stations at bus stops, markets, public places and motor parks to stop the spread of
COVID-19.
Methodology/Strategy:
Our strategy is to provide a hygiene education and carefully constructed local portable tap stations
(simple two-bucket hand washing stations, one with a spigot and a mix of water and chlorine to kill
viruses and other pathogens and another bucket below it to capture the used water) for the classroom,
local health centers and community public places; this will greatly improve access to running water and
soap for hand washing and hygiene for health.
a. Create a hand washing habit where it previously does not exist to safeguard public health
b. Improve the health and well-being of children and the community throughout the South East
Nigeria (to achieve Goal 3 of SGDs)
c. By providing a locally constructed tap stations and hand washing education to the classroom,
community centers and local health facilities
d. Provide soap, combined with WASH education, to help keep children and their families safe
during this pandemic
e. To provide public address systems with pre-recorded sensitization messages to the communities
f. To provide posters in varied local languages to be distributed and posted at strategic locations
across the communities
g. To greatly improve health by creating hand washing behavioural change, drastically reducing
communicable diseases spread through poor hygiene practices and lack of basic infrastructure
To achieve this, individuals will be taught using interactive learning with innovative use of:
• visual demonstrations
• hand washing songs
• skits and other playful activities to make the experience fun and engaging.
•Public places provided with extensive signage advising the public on how to stay
healthy
In addition, the project will train community facilitators across the target communities on the dangers of
COVID-19 and how individuals and communities can take precautionary measures to staying safe.
It is expected that at the end of the project implementation the following changes can be seen:
• 50% of school children in the target communities have clear understanding of good and proper
hygiene practices
• 50% of the target community population is aware about good hygiene practices and measures to
stay safe
• 60% of people in the target communities washing their hands with soap and water using the hand
washing stations and soap provided
• A healthy community environment that is conducive for children to and community members
to stay safe and healthy
• Significant decrease in reported hygiene related illnesses by as much as 56%
• positively influence hygiene practices in their homes, among family members and in the wider
community
• Change their current hygiene behaviors and continue better hygiene practices in the future
