OPERATING
PROCEDURE

Safety means continuing and healthful living without injury. Safety is freedom from
harm or the danger of harm. The word safety also refers to the precautions people
take to prevent accidents, harm, danger, damage, loss and pollution. Safety also
deals with improvement in working conditions for better health. Management is
responsible to provide safe working condition and individual’s safety.
All undesired events in a workplace which can give rise to death, ill health, injury,
damage or other loss need to be thoroughly investigated, people are trained to
safeguard against them, and need to be eliminated. Similarly, all hazards, i.e.,
source/situation capable of injury or ill health, damage too properly or workplace
environment etc., should be identified and action plan drawn for safeguard against
them.
It is not only sufficient to care of safety but other two inter-related aspects; health
and environment are also given equal importance and considerations. All these three
elements are safety, health and environment (also known as SHE) are inter-related
and affect each other. For instance, if health of the student/trainee is not given due
regards, it may lead to accidents.
If the institution pollutes the environment around work place, it will affect the health
of students/trainees which may ultimately affect their performance it is only if health
and environment are in control than safety can be ensured. Therefore every
educator has certain obligations towards keeping good environment and also
towards health of the students.
GENERAL SAFETY IN MACHINE SHOP
1. No attempt should be made to operate the Lathe Machine until you are
certain. Know the proper procedure and have been checked out on it by your
instructors.
2. Dress appropriately. Remove necklace, sweater, wristwatch and jewelries.
Wear an apron or a proper fitted shop coat. Safety goggles are a must.
3. Clamp all work solidly. Use the correct size tool or work holding device for the
job. Get help when handling heavy chucks or attachments.
4. Check work frequently when it is being machined between centers. The work
expands as it heats up and could damage the tailstock center
5. Be sure all guards are in place before attempting to operate the machine.
6. Turn the faceplate or chuck by hand to be sure there is no binding or damage
in the work striking any parts of the Lathe Machine.
7. Keep machine clear of tools
8. Stop the machine before making measurement or adjustments.
9. Remember, chips are sharp. Do not attempt to remove them with your hand
when they become “Stringy” and build up on the tool post. Stop he machine
and remove them with pliers.
10.Support all work solidly. Do not permit small diameter work to project to far
from the chuck without support from the tailstock.
11.Be careful not to run the cutting tool into the chuck. Check out any
readjustment of work or tool for ample clearance when the tool has been
moved left to the farthest point that will be reached
12.Stop the machine before attempting to wipe down the machined surface.
Keep cleaning and coolant brushes clear of the work when knurling.
13.If work must be repositioned or removed from the Lathe Machine. Move the
cutting tool clear of the work to prevent accidental injuries.
14.Do not talk to anyone or permit anyone to fool around the machine while you
are operating it. You are the only one who should turn the machine on and off
or make any adjustments to the Lathe Machine while operating it.
15.Never attempt to run the chuck ON or OFF of spindle using power. It is
dangerous practice to stop the Lathe Machine by reversing the direction or
rotation. The chuck could spin off and cause serious injury and there is danger
of damaging the machine.
16.You should always be aware of the direction of travels and speed of the
carriage before engaging automatic feed.
17.Always remove the key from the chuck. Make a habit never to let go of the key
until it is out of the chuck and clear of the work area
18.Tools must not be placed on the Lathe ways. Use a tool board or place them
on a Lathe trays
19.Files must be used on the Lathe unless they are fitted with handles.
20.Stop the machine immediately if some noise or vibration develops while you
are operating it. If you cannot locate the trouble, get help from the instructor.
Under no condition should the machine be operated until the trouble has
been corrected.
21.Remove sharp edges and burrs from the work before removing it from the
machine.
22.Plan your work thoroughly before starting, have all needed tools at hand.
23.Use care when cleaning the Lathe Machine, chips sometimes sticks in
recesses. Remove them with brush or short stick. Never use a floor dust to
clean the machine or compressed air.
