Methods, Equipment's Quality & Productivity: Assignment No.6

The document summarizes 11 factors that can negatively impact productivity on construction projects: lack of good quality products, incorrect estimating, wastage on site, poor site safety, repetitive work, poor planning, lack of innovative methods, poor communication, faulty works, equipment and material unavailability, and inspection delays. For each factor, the document discusses how it can decrease productivity and increase costs if not properly managed on construction projects.

Sr. No. Factor for Discussion/arguments
decline of
Productivity

1 Lack of good  That may decrease the durability of your project.

quality  That can affect the overall aesthetics of your project. If
product you use a poor-quality material, you may not be too
happy with the end result.
 By using such products, cost can be affected. While
you will initially save money on the project by opting
for low-quality materials, chances are it will cost you
more in the long run.
 If you’re a contractor, poor-quality materials can
actually hurt your reputation
2 Incorrect  Inaccurate cost estimations create inaccurate financial
Estimating information that affects the decision-making process on
different projects. Incorrect figures may result in
unnecessary or detrimental effects on the company,
hence affecting productivity.
3 Wastage on  Effects the cost
site  Effect the productivity
 Create hurdle for machinery and supply vehicles
4 Site safety  The leading safety hazards on construction sites include
falls, being caught between objects, electrocutions, and
being struck by objects. These hazards have caused
injuries and deaths on construction sites , so proper
safety precautions are required.
5 Repetitive  This delays the project completion
work  Effects the workers ability
 Exceeds cost
6 Poor Planning  The main impact of poor planning is project failure.
 Over-extension of project deadlines.
 Miscommunication between team members and
managers.
 Lack of clarity on project objectives

External Limitations of Planning

1. Political Climate- Change of government from Congress

to some other political party, etc.
2. Labor Union- Strikes, lockouts, agitations.
3. Technological changes- Modern techniques and
equipment’s, computerization.
4. Policies of competitors- Eg. Policies of Coca Cola and
Pepsi.
5. Natural Calamities- Earthquakes and floods.
6. Changes in demand and prices- Change in fashion,
change in tastes, change in income level, demand falls,
price falls, etc.

7 Lack of  There’s a high risk that technological advances can easily

innovate pass you by and the construction industry is no
methods exception. You have smart materials like “self-healing
concrete”, energy technologies, BIM, new advanced
apps, robotics and many more, but unfortunately
employees in this sector are not skilled enough to
accommodate these transformative changes.
 Digitalization is the new black and it positively
influences quality, economy, and time.

8 Poor  Project Failure is the severest impact that poor

communication communication can produce.
 Dispute is a common impact and can be seen in all
phases of the project.
 Over Budget is one the highest risks to any construction
project in the industry. Poor project management skills,
poor coordination and inefficient communication can all
be seen as causes to this dangerous impact.
 Time overrun is a highly frequent impact and might lead
to penalties and loss of profits for
 The shareholders involved.
 Accidents on site are hazardous health and safety issues
that could be rooted to poor communication of
instructions to avoid these disasters.
 Poor quality of work in the construction industry can
ultimately lead to an unsatisfactory result because
information flows through several shareholders.
 Reworks are costly in terms of money and time. The
slightest inaccurate or misinterpreted piece of
information can cause days of rework in the office or on
site.
 Poor collaboration is a result of many defects in
communication within an organization or between
organizations.
 Low productivity rate can be the result of many factors
but the fact remains that poor work is
 Produced in terms of quality and quantity this directly
affects the outcome of the project.

 Poor understanding of information means that the

communication process that carried this data from the
sender to the receiver was not completed successfully.
 Poor interpretation means that information was
misunderstood which can lead to incorrect actions being
undertaken that could waste money and time.
 Mistakes vary in their effects depending on the
magnitude of the negative impact caused.
 Unsatisfied client is an impact of many negative
processes that continued throughout the project lifecycle
without being resolved.
 Constant schedule changes requires accurate and clear
communication as the construction industry demands
collaboration between shareholders that rely on each
other’s schedules to complete certain goals.
 Poor output quality relies on the quality of input that
shareholders invest in a project.
 Vulnerability to risks increases as the vital
communication process is poor within a project causing
the probability of risks to increase
 Unsatisfactory documentation arises in a project due to
poor information transfer and storage

9 Faulty works.  Assign a period for revising and repairs (5 to 10 days or a

month).
 Assign lower performance levels in order to take up
possible delays.
 To budget a symbolic sum for unforeseen expenses
proportional to the estimated execution cost. This would
compensate the price rise that may come up

10 Equipment  Previous market research of local company suppliers.

and materials  Make a list with the necessary machinery before each
Unavailability. stage and plan to have it available immediately.
 Record the moment when orders have to be placed,
taking into account time for delivery to the site.
 Taking into account known performance values, plan the
building with available equipment in the company and
prepare for that not available.
 Carry out a purchasing and supplies plan
11 6. Inspection  Not considered. Actions are improvised.
delays  Incorporate a “Quality Control” section, recording the
date and time when inspection is required.
 Include plan of approvals or sample delivery of work
done.
