PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT — Less than 6 months

1. Ask at least two mentors for feedback on my next assignment/task.


2. Subscribe to an instructional design newsletter (eLearning Industry, 2020) to begin building a collection of
research materials benefitting my work.
3. Expand my developmental network by connecting online via social media with people I already know.
4. Connect with other professionals in my field through LinkedIn.com and Glassdoor.com.
5. Read and study Victims and Survivors’ Own Stories of Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse (Gekoski & Broome,
2019)
6. Obtain a journal and begin reflective journaling on a daily basis, paying attention to my current professional
skills and experiences.
7. Renew background checks and First Aid certifications.
8. Research campus organizations and identify three that are relevant to my future work and/or connected
through AFCAN.
9. Take workplace and cross-cultural communication courses/training inside and outside of ASU.
10. Volunteer part-time with an advocacy organization (ChildHelp) to build outreach skills.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT — 6 months to 1 year

1. Select at least six critical reflections from my journal to include in my online professional portfolio (My
Weebly.com site - Emily Copeland’s Portfolio).
2. Participate in advanced training related to criminal justice and family crisis support.
3. Join one of the researched campus organizations and become an involved member on and off campus.
4. Enter an internship program with an advocacy organization such as the Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy
Center (n.d.).
5. Become employed full-time as an advocate (ChildHelp).
6. Develop at least one relationship with someone who is not connected to anyone else in my network.
7. Transform newfound weak ties developed in online communities into strong ties relationships.
8. Participate in three different instructional design workshops and seminars (MarylandOnline, 2020).
9. Help facilitate a professional communication workshop through my organization.
10. Administer a revised 360-Degree Assessment covering my 5 initial categories as well as three others.
SKILL ACQUISITION — Less than 6 months

1. Select one language (Spanish) to begin studying independently.


2. Pick one feature of relationship strength to focus on improving each month.
3. Use the virtual platform offered by Lucid Software Inc. (2020) to create a learning trajectory for my career in
advocacy.
4. Seek advice from mentors and practice designing learning environments for participants of all ages in an
advocacy setting.
5. Focus on nurturing skills specifically highlighted in instructor feedback.
6. Develop a measurable flexibility rewards system where I earn small rewards each time I demonstrate flexibility
in my personal and professional life.
SKILL ACQUISITION — 6 months to 1 year

1. Attend a series of immersive language learning workshops.


2. Use the TEL 431 Mentoring document to re-assess mentoring relationships.
3. Routinely use the tracker developed by Asana (n.d.) to record achievements and share progress with advocacy
peers.
4. Implement one of my learning designs into an advocacy-based setting (Child Help, n.d.) and make necessary
adjustments for future use.
5. Ask supervisors for feedback and combine it with past feedback into an ongoing development guide.
6. Create and embed additional challenges into my flexibility rewards system after earning all initial achievements
included in the system.
BEHAVIORS PRACTICED — Less than 6 months

1. Create a goal-setting journal for daily goals, weekly goals, and monthly goals.
2. Contact peers/mentors once per month to increase accountability.
3. Seek out community engagement and events at least once per month.
4. Practice networking abilities by attending at least two social events per month.
5. Join a community of practice such as the National Association of Social Workers (n.d.) and/or the Alliance of
Arizona Nonprofits (2017).
6. At least once every other month, pursue opportunities within my community where I work with individuals
outside of my area of expertise.
BEHAVIORS PRACTICED — 6 months to 1 year

1. Add my goal-setting journal to my online professional portfolio with reflections and critiques about my
progress.
2. Add four additional peers/mentors to my network.
3. Join an outreach development team through my organization.
4. Put newly-developed networking skills into practice by attending an a major professional event (i.e. a national
organization event).
5. Shadow a volunteer and/or employee within the organization(s) I have joined.
6. Assist with an outreach project outside of my area of expertise (one primarily focusing on adults rather than
children).
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT (ALL AREAS) — 1 to 2 years
1. Start and maintain a professional blog that includes helpful advocacy resources and serves as an extension of
my reflective journaling practices.
2. Join a global child and family advocacy initiative to create additional collaborative opportunities for my
workplace organization.
3. Become a certified Victim Advocate through the National Children's Advocacy Center (2019).
4. Earn a second language proficiency certification recognized by my organization.
5. Enter the Family & Human Development (MS) degree program at ASU.
6. Participate in additional situated learning models (coaching, service learning, etc.) through my workplace
organization.
7. Complete a thorough self-assessment targeting my current and developing proficiencies in each Learning
Forward SPL.
8. Target three additional categories (Bias for Action, Innovation, and Project Management) to be assessed in six
months and after one year.
9. Develop a virtual graphic organizer detailing all members of my developmental network to be added to my
online professional portfolio.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT (ALL AREAS) — 1 to 2 years
10. Create an assessment tool for people in my developmental network to respond to so I may further analyze how
my network has grown, improved, and is in need of additional support.
11. Participate in a mentoring workshop with at least two of mentors I have strong ties relationships with.
12. Attend a professional development event sponsored by Learning Forward.
13. Initiate a virtual community of practice for other advocates within my workplace organization to participate in.
14. Design a situated learning module (focused on service learning) for my advocacy clients.
15. Develop and facilitate a personal development workshop (focused on vulnerability) that is accessible for all
members of my community.
16. Become a professional mentor for someone else to establish reciprocal motivation and accountability.
17. Create an assessment based on the 360-Degree Assessment to evaluate the collective professional behaviors
and competencies of my organization's advocacy team.
18. Contribute to findings surrounding learning design by participating in research studies focused on my
workplace environment.
