CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
Introducing the student to the engineering profession in general
and the learning objectives that new students should attain, as
aligned with the ABET requirements. Covering the basics of the
engineering profession and engineering ethics. Introduction to the
different engineering majors and to the learning objectives as
specified by ABET. Insight into different engineering courses that
are not technical in nature (e.g., engineering economy)
Engineering design tasks that allow the student to start thinking as
engineers: problem definition, specification of constraints,
investigation of different solution alternatives, implementation of
best solution, writing technical reports. Fundamental tools and
numerical software used in engineering. The tools and software
covered could be generic or specific to a major.

3
QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THE COURSE?

 Do I really want to study engineering?

 What is engineering and what do engineers do?
 What tools do engineers use?
 What is engineering design?
 How to think and write as an engineer?
 What are some of the areas of specialization in engineering?
 How many different engineering disciplines are there?
 Do I want to become a mechanical engineer, or should I pursue civil engineering? Or
would I be happier becoming an electrical engineer?
 How will I know that I have picked the best field for me?
 Will the demand for my area of specialization be high when I graduate, and beyond
that?

mathematical and natural sciences, gained by
study; experience, and practice, is applied with
judgment to develop ways to use, economically,
the materials and forces of nature for the benefit
of mankind.

COLLEGE MAJOR STATISTICS

ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENTS: CIVIL

 Panama canal: huge 'cuts' out of the land were made to connect the oceans and
inland lakes. Eventually they managed to successfully build a system of canal locks

ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENTS: ELECTRICAL

 1947:First point contact transistor

John Bardeen, Walter H. Brattain, and William B. Shockley
of Bell Labs discover the transistor. Brattain and Bardeen
build the first point contact transistor, made of two gold foil
contacts sitting on a germanium crystal. When electric
current is applied to one contact, the germanium boosts
the strength of the current flowing through the other
contact.
