Teacher: Good morning class! How was your weekend?
k
Student: My weekend was great! My soccer team won first place in our tournament!
Student: On Saturday I went hiking and after I went swimming with my family.
Teacher: That is so good to hear! I have a question for everyone, If you love money raise
your hand?( all the students raise their hand)
Another question if you know the values of each coin and know how to count money
keep your hand raise( most of the students hands went down)
That’s okay! Today’s lesson is all about money and knowing each value and knowing how
to count it. We will first start off with my powerpoint presentation, then I will need a
volunteer to help me pass out our fake money and use it to help us on our worksheet.
Then after working individually on our worksheets as a class we will go over the answers
on our smartboard, then we will have a fun game of kahoot to end our lesson. Whos
ready to start?
Student: We are ready!
d
Teacher: Very excellent! Who doesn’t love finding pennies on the ground? If we learn
about the values of coins and dollars, then we can save everything up to buy something
fun! We are going to learn about the values of United States coins up to dollar bills. We
will be able to associate value with coin or dollar. Now starting with our powerpoint, does
anyone know the lowest value coin is?
Teacher: Very good! The penny has the lowest value of all money it is only worth one cent.
By looking at this picture, the coin is copper and the most shiniest coin of them all. This is
the only coin that is made out of copper. In order to make one whole dollar you will need
one hundred pennies which is a lot! When you are counting money the penny is the only
coin you are able to skip by 1s. Does anyone have any questions about the coin penny?
Student: No…
Teacher: Okay if no one has any questions we will be moving on to the next coin which will
be the nickel. This coin value is 5 cents and the color of the dime is silver. In order to get a
s
full dollar you will need 20 nickels. When using nickels you will be skip counting by fives.
For example if you need 25 cent you could use 5 nickels or you can use 4 nickels and use
five pennies, both ways will give you 25 cent. Does anyone have any questions about the
nickel?
Student: No we understand..
Teacher: Great! Moving on can anyone guess what coin we will talk about next?
Teacher :Very good guess but we will be talking about the dime. This coin value is 10
cents and it is also a silver color. In order to get one dollar from only dimes you will need
ten of them.
Teacher: For example, if you have a balance of one dollar you need to pay and only have
d
pennies, nickels, and dimes you can create many different combinations of having one full
dollar. One way is having five dimes, eight nickels, and ten pennies. This combination will
give you one dollar. Does everyone understand so far?
Teacher: The very last coin we will be talking about is a quarter. This coin is also a silver
color and is one of the biggest coins. The quarter is valued at 25 cent. You only need for of
them to make one dollar. Most people carry around quarters rather than any other coin
because the value is much larger. Would you rather carry around one dollar of pennies or
one dollar of quarter and why raise your hand with your answer?(Most students raise
their hand)
Student: I would rather have one dollar of quarters because you only need four and for
pennies you need one hundred of them to have one dollar.
Teacher: Yes very good, I would rather have quarters than pennies too it will be so much
f
lighter. Now we will be talking about about paper money. Paper money is often used more
than coin money because it is much lighter and does not make as much noise. Does
anyone know the paper money with the least amount of worth?
Teacher: Yes very good it’s just like the penny the worth of this bill is only one. This bill has
the least amount of worth and in many in instances you will need a couple of one dollar
bills to pay for items. In order to get 100 dollars you will need one hundred one dollar bills.
Can anyone guess what is the next paper bill we will be talking about?
Teacher: You have the right idea about the worth being 5 but we are not talking about
coins anymore we are talking about paper bill. Instead of cents what would be the value?
Student: Would it be a dollar?
e
Teacher: Yes it would be dollar instead of cents. The next paper bill would be the five
dollar bill. You will need 20 of the five dollar bills to make one hundred dollars. If you are
having trouble keeping track of what bills are worth what here is a trick. By looking at this
pictures of the bills on the presentation you can see in the corner of the bill there is the
number and that number representation how much the bill is. By looking at this picture of
the one dollar bill there is a number one in the corner.
Teacher: Yes it does make it easier. Moving on to the next paper bill it would be the ten
dollar bill. Much like the dime you need ten dollar bills to make one hundred dollars. If you
remember the trick I just told you guys if you can see the corner there is a number 10. For
this next bill I am going to put up a picture on the screen and using the trick I taught you
can anyone tell me the worth of this bill?
Student: By using the trick there is a number twenty in the corner so is the value twenty
d
dollars?
Teacher: Yes very good! By using the trick you are able to see a twenty and the worth of
this bill is twenty dollars. In order to have one hundred dollars you will need four twenty
dollars bill. The four paper bills I have talked about are very common and you will see
many adults have them and use them regularly in everyday life. These next two bills I am
going to talk about are bigger amount and don’t see them as much. The first one we will
talking about is the fifty dollar bill and you only need two of them to make one hundred
dollars. Does anyone know what the last bill we will be talking about and has the highest
worth?
Teacher: Yes! The hundred dollar bill has the highest worth of all the bills.
Teacher: Now that we have gone through our whole powerpoint and understand the
d
worth of most coins and paper money we will began our activity of the day. Can I have a
volunteer to help me pass out our fake money we will be using for our worksheets? (All of
the students raise their hand)
Thank you helping me pass out our money for our worksheets! For the first worksheet
there is four different items you will be purchasing and the price is written right
underneath the item. Using the coins that were passed out to you, figure out the exact
change you will need using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to pay for the item. We
will be working individually first figuring out the change we need and after as a class I will
need four different voleners to come up to the smartboard and tell everyone your answer
and how you were able to figure it out. Lets go ahead and get started.
(I will go ahead and give students about 15 minutes to work on the first worksheet
individually and walk around the classroom asking them if they have any questions or
need any help)
Teacher: Okay class it’s been about 15 minutes I will need four different volunteers to
d
come up to the smartboard and show us your answer. I need a student to use the
smartboard to say what coins they used to buy the eraser.
Student: When I was trying to figure out what coins I needed to make 15 cents I
remembered the dime is worth 10 cents and that was the first coin I needed. I need five
more cents to make 15 cents. I used five pennies that makes 5 cent. Once i counted my
one dime and five pennies my answer was 15. I was able to buy the eraser. (using the
smart board I will have a picture of the worksheet and using a special marker they drag
the coin they desire and explain how they got the answer)
Teacher: Awesome job! There was two correct answers for this question you can either
use one dime and five pennies or one dime and one nickel either answer is correct. I need
another volunteer to answer the next question.
Student: I was trying to figure out what coins I needed to buy the piece of gum. The
ss
amount was larger than 25 which the value of a quarter I knew one of my coins will be a
quarter now I needed 10 more cents which is a dime and that’s how I was able to buy the
gum.
Teacher: Very good! That is exactly how I would have figured out the problem. There is a
couple of different answered you could have had for this one, you could have one quarter
and one nickel and five pennies as well as long as your final answer is 35 cent. I need
another volunteer to answer the next question.
Student: For the yoyo I need 31 cents to be able to buy it, I first started with the biggest
coin which is the quarter and I know that is 25 cents. After that I needed six more cents to
be able to buy it I know I needed a nickel and penny to finish the problem.
Teacher: Nice work! The way you thought the problem out is very good and exactly how
you need to do it. Now for the last problem for this worksheet. One more volunteer.
Student: This was the easiest problem! The money I needed to buy the ball was only eight
s
cent, I know I needed three pennies and one nickel that equal eight cents.
Teacher: Awesome job! For this particular problem there was only one possibility to be
able to get the right answer. Great job everyone on this worksheet not moving on to the
next one that will be about paper money. This activity will be very similar you will work
individually, then as a class we will use the smartboard to explain how we got our
answers.
(After passing out the worksheets I will give students about 10 minutes to answer all four
questions and will walk around the class helping students having more of a difficult time
and asking students if they have any questions about the worksheet)
Okay class it’s been about 10 minutes, I will need four new volunteers to tell the class
how they got the answers.
Student: For question number one there was four one dollar bills we had to add up I know
s
there were all one dollar bills because there was a number one in the corner. After adding
it up my answer was four dollars.
Teacher: That’s the right answer four one dollar bills does equal four dollars. Moving on to
the next question who wants to come up to the class and show us how you got your
answer.
Student: For question two there was one five dollar bill and one dollar bill I also know this
because of the number in the corner. After adding five plus one I got six dollars.
Teacher: Correct! If you add five and one you get six. Now moving on to the next question.
Student: This question was super easy! The answer is twenty because there is only one
bill and the number is twenty in the corner.
Teacher: Yes that was a super easy question! I wanted to see if you guys were able to use
s
the trick I taught you. Now for the last question on this worksheet and then we’ll go
ahead and grab our class ipads and play a game of kahoot. I need one more volunteer to
go over the last problem.
Student: For the last problem there is one ten dollar bill and one dollar bill I was able to
add both of these numbers and I was able to get eleven dollars as my totol.
Teacher: Very good! I am so proud how all of the class was able to count count coins and
paper money. Now as a reward we can play a fun game of kahoot. I want you to write your
name at the top of the paper and pass it forward. Now I want you to pick up the paper
money and put it back in the bag where you found it and pass it up as well. After we’re
done cleaning we can grab our class ipads and join the kahoot game the game code will be
on the smartboard.
Teacher: After your done putting the code wait patiently for the rest of the class to be
d
done as well
(During the kahoot game I will be displaying the coins and asking them to name them and
what the value is. I will also put similar questions like they had one worksheet #2 and ask
them how much does the bills add up to. After the kahoot game the lesson is finished.)
Great job everyone on the lesson today. I will also be assigning a homework assignment
and it will be due friday. This homework assignment is very similar to the worksheets we
did as a class.
Everyone did amazing tomorrow we will be going over some of the same material. Now it’s
time for lunch!
