CONTROL OF MAIN ELECTRICAL
EQUIPMENTS
1 GENERAL
GTG/STG can be operated under automatic sequencing mode: from startup to
synchronize speed, starting of auxiliaries in sequence, automatic voltage
regulation by means of automatic synchronizer, final adjustment in the speed
and voltage, closing of the associated GCB to connect the generator to bus bar
and then load up the generator according to pre-set load limit.
2
i) The automatic speed match of the automatic synchronizer controls the
governor motor and adjusts the generator speed to match with the system
frequency.
ii) The automatic voltage balancer controls the voltage setting motor of
automatic voltage regulator and adjusts the generator transformer voltage
to match with system voltage.
iii) The automatic synchronizer will initiate the closing of associated GCB
when the phase of both the voltages match.
On the other hand, manual synchronization can be performed at ECB (where
synchronization facilities are mounted by selecting to ‘CHECK-SYNC’).
f) The following electrical parameters of generator can be monitored at ECB.
- Exciter current
- Balance meter
- Exciter volt
- Generator current
- Generator volt
- Generator watt
- Generator var
- Generator frequency
- Generator power factor
- Generator transformer HV winding temp.
- H2 gas purity
- H2 gas pressure
- Generator stator temp.
- Generator rotor temp.
g) Alarm for the generator/generator circuit are indicated on the annunciators at
ECB. Trip alarm are with red facia.

3 220 kV SWITCHYARD CONTROL
a) The complete configuration of 220 kV switchyard with status of GCB,
isolators and earth switches are shown on ECB. Alarm (trip or non-trip)
relating to switchyard is also indicated on the annunciators at ECB.
b) Manual check sknc facilities are provided at ECB.
For generator circuits, automatic synchronizers are mounted at respective
protection panels for ease of synchronising.
c) All GCB and isolators of 220 kV switchyard can be controlled from ECB.
d) Maintenance transfer selector switches are provided at ECB along with every
bay (except bus transfer breaker and bus coupler), so that each circuit can be
switched to the bus transfer breaker at ease if required. However, the transfer
control circuit is interclocked such that at any one instance, only one circuit
can be transferred to the transfer bus.
e) The busbar voltage and current for each circuit can be read from ECB.
4
5 CONTROL OF 6.6 kV SWITCHBOARD
a) The following GCBs can be controlled from ECB (remote).
- incomer of station transformer
- incomer of black start gas turbine generator
- bus couple
- Auxiliary transformer feeder
b) For motor feeders, GCB can be :
- opened from local push button station
- closed from local push button station through automatic sequence logic
circuit.
- Closed/ opened from unit control panel through automatic sequence logic
circuit.
- Closed/opened from switchgear panel through logic circuits.
c) Each GCB can be put at either one of the following position :
- service
- test
- Separate earthing trucks are provided for cable/ bus earthing which can
be inserted to any feeder incomer (for control of earth switch).
- Draw out
Only at ‘Test’ position, GCB can be closed at switchgear panel.
At ‘Service’ or ‘Test’ position, GCB can be closed from remote
(ECB, local push button station or control panel).
Earthing switch can only be controlled at switchgear panel.
5
e) Fast automatic changeover facilities are provided of changeover of station
transformer incomers and bus coupler to improve reliability of 6.6 kV
system.
f) The control circuit for motor feeder is interlocked such that when local
push button station is at ‘STOP’ the GCB cannot be closed from the
control panel or switchgear panel.
a) ACB’s for incomers and bus coupler of 415 V power Centres can be
controlled from ECB (remote).
b) For motor feeders, apart from being controlled from switchgear panel,
ACB can be :
- Opened from local push button station (when local push button station is
at ‘STOP’’ position, ACB cannot be closed from control panel or
switchgear panel)
- Closed from local push button station through automatic sequence logic
circuit.
6
At ‘SERVICE’ or ‘TEST’ position, ACB can be closed from remote
(local push button station or control panel).
In addition to the alarms and electrical parameters being indicated at ECB and
annunciator panels, equipments of the power station can also be monitored from
DAS.
