Demeter

My name is Demeter, the goddess of crops, harvests, agriculture, and fertility.

Some call me Ceres, which is my roman name. My parents are Cronus and Rhea and I

have five brothers and sisters. My brother Zeus became very jealous of my relationship

with Iasion. Iasion was a loving mortal prince and we had two children, Plutus and

Philomenus. Zeus killed Iasion and I was devastated, I swore I would never forgive him

( S a u n d e r s , a n d A 1 ) . One day he came to me begging for forgiveness, I felt

terrible denying my own brother so I accepted his apology. We then had a short

relationship. During our relationship we had our daughter Persephone. While caring for

Persephone I noticed that mankind was having a very difficult time harvesting their

crops. I gave them the fertile land they needed but they did not know how to use this. I

hated seeing them suffer everyday so I decided to help them. I taught them how to plough

fields and settle their crops. I also taught them how to grow, preserve and prepare their

crops ( S a u n d e r s , a n d A 1 ) . Seeing mankind successfully plant and grow their own

crops made me feel very satisfied. I love helping people and seeing them succeed, it’s a

great feeling.

One terrible day I made a decision I will never forget. I let my daughter

Persephone play outside alone for the first time. While outside the evil Hades had the

earth swallow my daughter up. He had been watching my daughter for a long time and

became very fond of her. He wanted Persephone to be his wife. When I found out she had

gone missing I went crazy, I loved my daughter with all my heart and could not live
without her. I searched for answers all day until finally Helios the sun god told me that

Hades had captured her. I knew it would take a miracle to get my daughter back and I

became very depressed. I cut off connection with all gods and didn’t speak to or see

anyone. This resulted in the starvation of many including Zeus. The weather was cold and

no plants or animals could survive. Zeus could not take it anymore and sent the

messenger Hermes to talk to Hades to try to get Persephone back home. Persephone was

allowed to come home, when she returned I was so happy that flowers bloomed and

summer was born. Persephone was summoned back to Hades six months later and I again

became very depressed. Leaves fell off the trees and winter came as a result of my

depression ( S a u n d e r s , a n d A 1 ) .
