Task 1 - Extended Response - Endocrine System and Dysfunction 2019

This document is an exam for a Year 12 ATAR Human Biology course. It consists of 3 questions asking students to: 1) Describe changes that would occur with a low basal metabolic rate. 2) Explain the likely cause and other symptoms of a patient presenting with weight loss, increased appetite, sweating, and restlessness, as well as treatment options. 3) Compare and contrast the mode of action of steroid and protein hormones, specifically how each causes cells to produce particular proteins.

Task 1 - Extended Response – Endocrine system and dysfunction

Name: ____________________________________ Marks = _______

Assessment Type: Extended Response

Task Weighting: 3%
Time allowed: 25 minutes

Homeostasis is the ability to maintain a constant internal environment in response to

environmental change. It is the unifying principle of biology

Both the endocrine and nervous systems control homeostasis by triggering specific
responses within the body to combat changes in the external environment. This involves
various organs and organ systems.

One such function that is controlled by homeostasis mechanisms is the body’s basal
metabolic rate.

a) Describe the changes that would occur within the human body if the basal metabolic
rate of a person was considered low.
(7 marks)

A patient presented to a Doctor with the following symptoms; weight loss, increased
appetite, sweating and restlessness.

b) Explain the likely cause of these symptoms, outline any other symptoms the patient
may experience, along with the treatment options that would be available to the
patient. (5 marks)

Testosterone is a steroid hormone whereas insulin is a protein hormone.

c) Compare and contrast the mode of action of steroid and protein hormones, in
particular to how each hormone causes the cell to produce a particular protein.
