Course Outline - Math 8

This document outlines the goals, objectives, and requirements for a Grade 8 mathematics course. The main goals are for students to use and value mathematics, communicate reasoning, and be prepared for lifelong learning. Key components include communication, making connections, using tools and reasoning. The course covers number, patterns/relations, shape/space, statistics/probability. Students will be evaluated on tests weighted towards these areas, with a final exam comprising 10% of the total grade. Required materials and teacher expectations are also outlined.

Math 8 ÉLJHS

Ms. Lesyk 2019-2020

I. Goals and Objectives
Goals for Students:
The main goals of mathematics education are to prepare students to:
➢ use mathematics confidently to solve problems
➢ communicate and reason mathematically
➢ appreciate and value mathematics
➢ commit themselves to lifelong learning
➢ become mathematically literate adults
➢ be responsible for the course work in math class

II. Mathematical Processes

There are critical components that students must encounter in a mathematics program in order
to achieve the goals of mathematics education and embrace lifelong learning in mathematics.
Students are expected to
➢ communicate in order to learn and express their understanding
➢ connect mathematical ideas to other concepts in mathematics, to everyday experiences
and to other disciplines
➢ demonstrate fluency with mental mathematics and estimation
➢ apply new mathematical knowledge through problem solving
➢ develop mathematical reasoning
➢ select and use technologies as tools for learning and for solving problems
➢ develop visualization skills to assist in processing information, making connections and
solving problems

III. Strands, General Outcomes, Specific Outcomes, and Weighting

1. Number Strand (17-20 weeks) 50%

Unit 1 - Integers (3-4 weeks)

Multiply and divide integers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically

Unit 2 - Fractions (4 weeks)

Show an understanding of multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers

Unit 3 - Percent (3-4 weeks)

Show understanding of Percent from 0 to 100+

Unit 4 - Squares and Square Roots (3 weeks)

Demonstrate an understanding of perfect squares and square roots, concretely,
symbolically,pictorially (limited to whole numbers)
● approximate square roots

1
2. Shape and Space (8 weeks) 20%
Unit 5 - Geometry

Apply Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems (1.5 weeks)

Draw, construct and label nets of 3D objects

Draw and interpret front, top and side views of 3D objects

Determine surface area of right rectangular prisms, right triangular prisms and right
cylinders

Determine volume of right rectangular prisms, right triangular prisms and right
cylinders

Demonstrate an understanding of congruence of polygons

3. Patterns and Relations (6-7 weeks) 15%

Unit 6 - Algebra
Solve one and two
step linear equations.
ax=b
x
a = b, a≠0
ax+b=c
x
a +b=c, a≠0
a(x+b)=c
where a,b,c are integers

Unit 7 - Linear Relations

Graph and analyse two-variable linear relations

4. Show understanding of ratio and rate (4 weeks)

Unit 8 - Ratio and Rate

Solve problems involving rate ratio and proportional reasoning

5. Stats and Probability (3 weeks) 5%

Unit 9 - Statistics

Critique ways in which data is presented in circle graphs, line graphs, bar graphs and
pictographs

Solve problems involving the probability of independent events

2
6. Shape and Space
Unit 10 - Transformations

I can draw, and describe transformations (translation, rotation, reflection)

I can determine the coordinates of an image after following a given combination of

transformations. Ex. Translate, then reflect the figure

IV. Evaluation
The program will be assessed using the following weightings:
Numbers 50%

Patterns and Relations 15%

Shape and Space 20%

Statistics and Probability 5%

Final Exam + 10%

100%
If you require a rewrite, the following are my conditions: 1) provide evidence that you have put in
effort to do better, 2) you can only get a max of 80%, and 3) your grade on PowerSchool will
show that it was a “rewrite” exam.

V. Required Materials
➢ Notebook/Scribbler
➢ Small binder
➢ Graph paper
➢ Lined paper
➢ Pencils and erasers
➢ Calculator (electronic devices
may not be used for tests)
➢ Geometry set (protractor,
compass, and ruler)

VI. Teacher Expectations

➢ ALL WORK MUST BE DONE IN PENCIL
➢ Be prepared-all materials should be with you
➢ Be on time-at the bell be in your desk with your books open
➢ Be respectful-everyone's rights, ideas and feelings are important
➢ Catch up on any missed work--find out what was missed during an absence
➢ Please ask for help if you do not understand a concept or need clarification
