Course Outline - Science 8

The grade 8 science program covers biological, physical, and Earth sciences concepts over 5 units throughout the year. The major goals are for students to become scientifically literate by developing knowledge and understanding of science concepts and processes. Units include Mechanical Systems, Mix and Flow of Matter, Cells and Systems, Fresh/Salt Water Systems, and Light and Optical Systems. Students will be evaluated on unit tests, with an additional final exam weighting of 10%. Required materials include a textbook, binder, paper, writing tools, and calculators. The teacher expects students to be prepared, on time, respectful, and catch up on any missed work.

Science 8 ÉLJHS

Ms. Lesyk 2019-2020

The grade eight Science program provides a broad range of learning experiences in the
biological, physical, and Earth sciences. The science curriculum is based on the premise that
science is an integral part of modern life and there are 3 major emphases:

1. The Nature of Science

2. Science and Technology
3. Social and Environmental Contexts

I. Goals and Objectives

Goals for Students:
The major objective of the junior high science program is to help the student to become
scientifically literate. Therefore, the student should be able to:
➢ demonstrate a working knowledge and practical understanding of the sciences
➢ evaluate scientific evidence (How and Why?)
➢ understand the processes by which scientific knowledge is developed and adapt those
processes for personal use
➢ apply science concepts, theories and processes to the investigation of everyday
problems
➢ understand the relationship of science and technology
➢ demonstrate awareness of how science and technology can function responsibly in a
social context
➢ recognize the limitations as well as the usefulness of science and technology in
advancing human welfare

II. Course Outline, Timeline, and Outcomes

Unit 1 - Mechanical Systems (8 weeks) 20%

1. Illustrate the development of science and technology by describing, comparing and

interpreting mechanical devices that have been improved over time
2. Analyze machines by describing the structures and functions of the overall system, the
subsystems and the component parts
3. Investigate and describe the transmission of force and energy between parts of a
mechanical system
4. Analyze the social and environmental contexts of science and technology, as they
apply to the development of mechanical devices

1
Unit 2 - Mix and Flow of Matter (7 weeks) 20%

1. Investigate and describe fluids used in technological devices and everyday materials
2. Investigate and describe the composition of fluids, and interpret the behavior of
materials in solution
3. Investigate and compare the properties of gases and liquids; and relate variations in
their viscosity, density, buoyancy and compressibility to the particle model of matter
4. Identify, interpret and apply technologies based on properties of fluids

Unit 3 - Cells and Systems (8 weeks) 20%

1. Investigate living things; and identify and apply scientific ideas used to interpret their
general structure, function and organization
2. Investigate and describe the role of cells within living things
3. Interpret the healthy function of human body systems, and show ways the body reacts
to internal and external stimuli
4. Describe areas of scientific investigation leading to new knowledge about body
systems and to new medical applications

Unit 4 - Fresh/Salt Water Systems (7 weeks) 15%

1. Describe the distribution and characteristics of water in local and global environments,
and identify the significance of water supply and quality to the needs of humans and
other living things
2. Investigate and interpret linkages among landforms, water and climate
3. Analyze factors affecting productivity and species distribution in marine and freshwater
environments
4. Analyze human impacts on aquatic systems; and identify the roles of science and
technology in addressing related questions, problems and issues

Unit 5 - Light and Optical Systems (7 weeks) 15%

1. Investigate the nature of light and vision; and describe the role of invention,
explanation and inquiry in developing our current knowledge
2. Investigate the transmission of light, and describe its behavior using a geometric ray
model
3. Investigate and explain the science of image formation and vision, and interpret
related technologies

2
III. Evaluation
The program will be assessed using the following weightings:
Mechanical Systems 20%

Mix and Flow of Matter 20%

Cells and Systems 20%

Fresh/Salt Water Systems 15%

Light and Optical Systems 15%

Final Exam + 10%

100%
If you require a rewrite, the following are my conditions: 1) provide evidence that you have put in
effort to do better, 2) you can only get a max of 80%, and 3) your grade on PowerSchool will
show that it was a “rewrite” exam.

IV. Required Materials

➢ Textbook (Science Focus 8)
➢ Three ring binder
➢ Lined and graph paper
➢ Ruler and calculator
➢ Pencils and erasers, pens, and coloured pencils/crayons

V. Teacher Expectations
➢ Be prepared-all materials should be with you
➢ Be on time-at the bell be in your desk with your books open
➢ Be respectful-everyone's rights, ideas and feelings are important
➢ Catch up on any missed work--find out what was missed during an absence
➢ Please ask for help if you do not understand a concept or need clarification
