Homework 4 Worksheet
1. A 10-cm x 10-cm hot surface at 100oC is to be cooled by attaching 270 pin fins. A portion of
the surface with fins is shown in the diagram below. The pin fins are made of aluminum (k =
237 W/m-oC) and are 3-cm long and 0.25-cm in diameter. The temperature of the
surrounding medium is 30oC, and the heat transfer coefficient on the surfaces is 35 W/m 2
-oC.
(a) Determine the rate of heat transfer q from the surface for a 10-cm x 10-cm section of
the plate. Include heat transfer from the exposed base as well as the heat transfer from
the fins.
(b) Determine the overall effectiveness of the fins (for the entire 10-cm x 10-cm section).
2. Consider a very long rectangular fin attached to a flat surface such that the temperature at
the end of the fin is essentially that of the surrounding air, i.e. 20 oC. Its width is 5.0 cm;
thickness is 1.0 mm; thermal conductivity is 200 W/m-K. The temperature of the flat
surface is Tb = 40oC, and the convective heat transfer coefficient between the fin and the
surrounding air is 20 W/m2-K.
(a.) Estimate the fin temperature at a distance of 5.0 cm from the base.
(b.) Estimate the rate of heat loss from the entire fin.
