Documentation of Evidence:
This class is an out of district placement. Students are bused in from
various areas of Orange County and LA county. The class has all boys with
emotional issues. The majority live in foster homes. Three are two or three para
professionals assisting in the class.
For today’s observation, about six of the boys had walked out of the room
during instruction time and were playing outside. They did not return for forty-
five minutes. Therefore there were only four boys participating in the lesson
presented.
For the lesson, Mr. Hernandez read two pages from the Harry Potter
book. The text was also shown on the Elmo. He did stop the reading several times
to asked the students, “Who are the characters in the story and what is the
setting?” After reading the selection, they were assessed by writing down the
setting and characters. A para professional gave bonus points for attending during
this period. I did not see the behavior specialist that was in the room assist in
anyway.
During the lesson, two of the students got up for a drink and two others
were playing with some objects during part of the reading. After the structured
lesson, students were allowed to play with box activities.
When the students from the playground arrived, there was no structured
math period that was organized.
Suggestions: Harry Potter is a very long book that would more
appropriately be read maybe after lunch for a “down time” of listening. I would
do this type of lesson in a small reading group at the students’ reading ability,
Differentiation and structure needs to be implemented in every lesson. See
my recommendations below.
