Educational Philosophy Katie Kirk

The author believes in a progressive philosophy of education that emphasizes learning by doing over traditional lecturing. She plans to divide classroom time evenly between lecture and student self-exploration of subjects. While recognizing the value of lectures, she thinks students learn more through hands-on discovery. Her goals are to create an open and welcoming environment where student diversity is accepted and students have freedom to explore their interests. While incorporating some technology, she does not plan for it to be the primary mode of instruction and believes face-to-face learning is still important.

The philosophy that most closely aligns with my beliefs is progressivism. I am a big

believer in learning by doing. Even though learning by doing can be more challenging, I believe

that it is necessary for students to be successful. It leads them to make independent decisions

without the help of the teacher. Students need to discover things on their own sometimes. I do

think that the teacher can lecture and do traditional classroom things; however, I also think it is

very important to let students explore on their own.

My method of teaching would be to do an even split of lecture and do self-exploration.

My goal would be to divide the time into 50/50 between the two. I believe lecturing provides

students with a foundation for the subject matter at hand. Although it is not the most engaging

method, I believe there is something to be said about traditional learning. If it has been

successful for this many years, it has to be somewhat effective. I also believe students learn

more by doing. My goal is to have students discover something themselves. I believe it will

resonate with them more than if they were to read it out of a textbook.

My goal is to have an open, safe learning environment. Student diversity plays a big role

in the classroom environment. Your culture shapes you into who you are. It is important to

recognize that all cultures should be welcomed and accepted in a classroom. Alongside

welcoming all students, I am a believer in allowing students freedom. I coach gymnastics and I

give my kids a lot of freedom. I do not give them a bunch of stuff to do just because I can. As a

teacher, I think I will allow my students space to discover what they deem as important. I am an
elementary education major, so I will be teaching younger kids. It is likely I will have stations in

my classroom. With that being said, I will keep an open environment within those stations. I like

a spacious learning environment because it allows children to learn what they are interested in.

Going back to the idea of accepting all cultures, if children are not accepting of their classmates'

cultures, the students who are being outcasted will have less motivation to work. It is much

easier to work in a group of people who accept you, rather than those who make you feel not

welcomed.

I am divided when it comes to assessing students. I believe both formative and

summative assessments are beneficial and fitting for assessing students. Formative

assessments are quizzes and tests that evaluate how someone is learning material throughout

a course. Summative assessments are quizzes and tests that evaluate how much someone has

learned throughout a course. I can’t say for certain, but I think I will lean more towards

Formative assessments. That is not to say I won’t use summative assessments as well. I think

Formative assessments allow students an outlet to show what they know without it being a pen

and paper test. I will be doing things such as projects, presentations, games, and group

activities. However, I do believe that summative assessments teach students study habits and

discipline. Sometimes you just have to know the material.

The role of technology in my classroom will play a part in assisting learning, but I do not

foresee myself integrating technology in all aspects of my classroom. In the age of technology, I

believe that it is important to use technology within the classroom, but I believe the bulk of

learning should be done face-to-face by discovery or hands-on activities. I will use technology at

a station or as a tool, but I don’t foresee my classroom being completely 1-to-1. I do believe

there is something to be said about technology opening many doors. Technology can provide
hands-on learning if done right like 3D printers or Virtual Reality. It makes it possible to learn by

discovery.
