The Challenge

Your task is to create a single page web application based on a Project

Scenario on the next page. The application should allow users to input
information, validate the information, display data in an appropriate
format based on the information entered and provide meaningful
feedback when validation has failed or passed.

The first part of the user experience involves visitors to a specially

designed site inputting information and being shown accommodation
options and related details based on the number of people in their party
and the length of time they intend to be staying.

User Research

The main target audience for this booking accommodation site

would be tourists who are interested in visiting NZ and who want to
find accommodation during their stay. NZ is a multi-cultural country,
therefore the users need to feel welcomed and respected when they visit
the site as well as feeling at ease when navigating through it and booking
their accommodation with hassle-free user experience. In regards
to this, a couple personas were put together to help understand the
requirements better.
Another possible target audience could be people who are already
living in NZ but want to explore their country a bit more, therefore they
would want to book accommodation for their holiday / vacation or even
business trip.

Persona One

Tourist family coming over to NZ to experience the authentic NZ nature

and need a place to stay. Unsure of how to book accommodation in a
foreign booking site, they rely a lot on prompts and images / icons to
guide them through. They are looking for something simple, easy to
interpret and understand and something that will give them the most
efficiency and assurance when booking their accommodation.
Since they are coming from overseas, a good NZ ‘look and feel’ should be
given to the site as well as a simplistic approach to cater to the possible
language barriers.
In regards to the user experience, understandable icons / prompts
should be taken into account and used throughout, once again to assist
those who are not fully fluent in English or possible older generations
who are not so ‘in tune’ with technology.

Persona Two

A local business man is in a hurry to book accommodation for his

business trip on late notice. He needs a site that is efficient, quick and
gives him assurance that he will get a booking in time. He is a proud kiwi
and loves nothing more than his own country and cannot wait to get out
of the house for a while and see more of NZ.
To cater to his needs, easy and fast user experience is important as well
as a ‘proud kiwi’ look to the site to get his full attention as well as enabling
him to book his accommodation mindlessly.

Wireframes

The wireframes were tested on various, potential users of different ages.

Users thought that the navigation was good and it easy to get through
the website and understand it. However, there were a few suggestions
involving the design and layout of the information that would help
improve the sight. A few of those suggestions were: - Adding a location
option to the landing page would benefit the site, giving it a more
‘professional’ and ‘real’ look. Also the users would be able to choose and
see where there accommodation options are around NZ. - Adding in a
filter option to filter through the types of accommodations available to
the user. This would add better user experience to the site for the user
wouldn’t have to scroll through the site and try find what they wanted in
their accommodation.

Competitor Analysis

Examining these two websites, it is noticed that they both have the same
layout and user experience to them. Their common grounds are:
- Both have a validated form which asks for the relevant information to
then display from it what is needed.
- Both contain a interactive map to assist the user when making
accommodation decisions.
- Both have a separate page for the user to input the relevant
information.
- Both display the inputted details at the top of the page, giving the user
a feeling of assurance and they are able to double check / change their
inputted data.
- In regards to the design, these two websites both have a ‘blocky’ design
to them and have roughly the same design principals and UX but differ
in terms of their ‘look and feel’ where Trivago is very clean and has a lot
of white space, creating a more ‘professional’ and an almost ‘bare’ feel
to it, maybe targeting more users who have had experience on the web
before and just want an easy and quick booking. However, Last Minute
seems to have focused a bit more on their design and has a more of a
modern feel to it, possibly targeting users who are looking for something
more welcoming.
