8. Two pipes of lengths 2500 m each and diameters 80 cm and 60 cm respectively are
connected in parallel. The coefficient of friction for each pipe is 0.006. The total flow is
equal to 250 litres/s. Find the rate of flow in each pipe.
9. Determine the rate of flow of water through a pipe of diameter 20cm and length 50 m
when one end of the pipe is connected to a tank and the other end is open to atmosphere.
The pipe is horizontal and the height water in tank is 4 m above the centre of pipe.
Consider all minor losses & take f =0.009 in the formula
Also draw Hydraulic Gradient Line (HGL) & Total Energy Line (TEL).
10. What is Syphon? On what principle it works?
11. What is mean by water hammer in pipes?
12. Obtain an expression for the force exerted by jet of water in the direction of jet on-
a. Fixed vertical plate
b. Fixed inclined plate
c. Moving vertical plate
13. Obtain an expression for the force exerted by jet of water on curved plate if-
a. The plate is stationary and jet striking at centre.
b. The plate is moving and jet striking at centre.
14. Prove that the work done per second on a series of moving curved vanes by a jet of water
striking at one of the tips of the vane is given by
15. Find the force exerted by jet of water of diameter 100 mm on a stationary flat plate, when
the jet strikes the plate normally with a velocity of 30 m/s.
16. A jet of water of diameter 100 mm moving with a velocity of 30 m/s strikes a curved fixed
symmetrical plate at the centre. Find the force exerted by jet of water in the direction of jet
if the jet is deflected through an angle of 120˚ at the outlet of curved plate.
17. A jet of water of diameter 75 mm moving with a velocity of 30 m/s, strikes a curved fixed
plate tangentially at one end at an angle of 30˚ to the horizontal. The jet leaves the plate at
an angle of 20˚ to the horizontal. Find the force exerted by the jet on the plate in the
horizontal & vertical direction.
