Instructions:
 Please read both the pages carefully first.

 Then, assume you are Mr. Shyam Shrestha, and reply to the queries of Mr. Ram Thapa in a letter.

Ram Thapa

In February 2019, Mr. Ram Thapa was considering the 2 job offers he had received after having gone through 4
placement interviews. He was a member of the graduating class of 2018 at the Pokhara Management Institution,
Pokhara. The students had informally accepted the norm that they would not be eligible to consider more than 2 job
offers.

Mr. Thapa had a first-class bachelor’s degree in engineering from a reputed engineering institution. Between his
graduation in 2014 and joining Pokhara Management Institution in 2016, he had worked first as a Graduate Trainee
and subsequently as a junior works engineer in Nepal Synthetics, the Nepali subsidiary of a diversified multinational
company.

Bagmati Paints, Kathmandu was one of the 2 concerns which had made an offer to Mr. Thapa. It had a turnover of
about Rs. 5 crores in 2018/2019. It was considered a highly successful enterprise in the trade circles. Mr. Shyam
Shrestha, the eldest son of the founder of the firm, the late Mr. Shri Shrestha, was the present Managing Director of
Bagmati Paints. He had a degree in paint technology and had subsequently attended an American business school.

Ms. Sita Rai, the Personnel Director of Bagmati Paints, had interviewed Mr. Thapa and others on campus in January
2019. 5 students including Mr. Thapa were invited to Bagmati Paints in the first week of February. Mr. Shyam
Shrestha met all of them individually and made offers to Mr. Thapa and 2 others.
On February 12 Mr. Ram Thapa wrote to Mr. Shyam Shrestha

Mr. Shyam Shrestha

Managing Director
Bagmati Paints Limited
Kathmandu

Dear Mr. Shrestha.

I have been anxious to inform you how much I appreciated our recent discussion at Kathmandu and your kind offer.

From the description, I figure that the opportunities offered by you are exciting. Over and above, working with a
growing organization like Bagmati Paints, I particularly value my possible association as the executive assistant to a
dynamic practitioner of professional management such as you.

I would like to mention, if I may, that I consider this offer to be between the 2 best I have received, the other one
being from my previous employers, viz., Nepal Synthetics, in a line position in their covenanted management cadre.
Although the other offer is better remuneration-wise, my principal objective in decision-making is career
development and personal growth. I shall weight the offers more seriously and, as promised, shall keep you posted
about my final decision in the next fortnight or so. Meanwhile, I have thought of a few questions, the answer to
which will help me a great deal in making up my mind. May I, therefore, request you to kindly spare a few minutes
to respond to these?

In my opinion, it is essential for an organization on its way up like Bagmati Paints to maintain a high rate of growth
and to work for diversification opportunities. I am keen to know what the long-term goals and commitments of
Bagmati Paints and yourself? More specifically where would Bagmati Paints be in the next 5 to 10 years in
comparison with the other paint industries? Also, I would like
to familiarize myself with the decision-making mechanisms within Bagmati Paints with reference to corporate
strategy planning. Further, since during my visit to Kathmandu there was not sufficient time to meet all the
divisional heads that I would eventually work with, I would appreciate finding out a little bit about them.

May I also seek some clarification pertaining to a few other items? What is the extent of leave travel assistance and
the housing subsidy? Is there any transport allowance? Also, what is the limit to which entertainment expenses are
reimbursable? While these are minor considerations, it would be helpful to know them.

I am enclosing, as per your instructions, a statement of expenses on the trip amounting to Rs. 5,500. I trust this is
okay with you.
I am looking forward to hearing from you at an early date. I would like to express once again my sincere gratitude
for your kind consideration and hospitability.

Yours sincerely, Ram Thapa.
