Problem Set - Laplace Transform

This document provides 5 problem sets involving the Laplace transform. The problems involve: 1) finding the Laplace transform of graphs, 2) solving differential equations using the Laplace transform, 3) determining position over time for a damped mass-spring system, 4) solving a system of ODEs using the Laplace transform, and 5) solving another system of ODEs using the Laplace transform.

PROBLEM SET- LAPLACE TRANSFORM

1. Using the definition, find the Laplace Transform of the functions represented by the graphs below.

2. Solve the following differential equation using Laplace Transform

y ' ' + 4 y ' +6 y=6 , y ( 0 )=0 , y ' ( 0 )=−1
y ' ' +2 y ' + y=sin t , y ( 0 )=−2 , y ' ( 0 )=1
y ' ' + 4 y ' +2 y =6 , y ( 0 )=−2 , y ' ( 0 ) =2
y ' ' +5 y ' +6 y=10 sin t , y ( 0 )=0 , y ' ( 0 )=−1

3. Consider the damped mass-spring system shown. The load has a mass of 2 kg. The
spring constant is 8 N/m and the damping coefficient is 10 N/s .m. The system is
initially in equilibrium. At t=0, the mass is given an initial velocity of 2 m/s upwards.
Determine the position (y) vs time (t) of the load. Is the system underdamped,
overdamped, or critically damped?

4. Solve the following systems of ODE using Laplace Transform

x ' −2 y=−6 e−2 t , y ' + 4 x=9 e−t

x ( 0 )=3 , y ( 0 )=1

5. Solve the following systems of ODE using Laplace Transform

x ' +2 x−2 y=−e−2t , y ' + x+ 2 y =t e−2 t

x ( 0 )=0 , y ( 0 )=1
