Practicum Weebly 1

My practicum was at Northwest Hospital with nurse manager Sarah Inman over 124 hours. I learned about the nurse manager leadership role through observing Sarah and her assistant Tom. This experience and my previous experience as an LPN will make me a well-rounded nurse. I attended various meetings that provided insight into hospital operations and leadership. I also learned about conducting interviews based on core values and the benefits of servant and transformational leadership styles through daily employee rounding with Sarah and Tom.

My practicum was at Northwest Hospital with nurse manager Sarah Inman.

I completed

124 hours during my practicum. I have learned a great extent of the Nurse Manager leadership

role under the guidance of Sarah and her Assistant Nurse Manager, Tom. This experience was

phenomenal and will help me in my future role as an RN. This practicum, combined with my 23

years of practicing as an LPN, will help me be a well-rounded nurse.

The highlight of what I learned

• How to conduct a Structured Behavioral interview based on Northwest core value

• Servant and Transformational leadership styles and the benefits of combining both.

How using these styles benefits the employees and the patient, as if it helps deliver patient-

centered care.

• How the hospital operation work from the Administration Point of view and the clinical floor.

I attended many meetings at Northwest

1. Daily administrative Huddles, focusing on Hospital safety.

2. Team meetings in the HOC office.

3. Leadership meetings

• Nurse leader council meeting.

• Shared governess meeting.

• Patient grievance (escalated)

4. Daily COVID-19 meetings.

5. Post-Code Blue debrief afterward.

I attended and learned the concept and of daily employee rounding with Sarah and Tom., as well

as the benefits of rounding daily. I learned how to assess the needs of our team members'. Also;

how to meet those needs. A valuable concept I learned from Sarah is; how to have a good work

and life balance. The importance of self -care, and the benefits it provides at the workplace.

Another invaluable experience was how the hospital must deal with an epidemic such as COVID-

19. They must prepare, plan, and assess how to handle an outbreak. Things changed daily, and

even hourly, as science-based evidence bought to light more information on COVID 19. The

entire hospital staff is under tremendous stress during a pandemic. The unknown sparks fear in

everyone, including staff, patients, and the community. The whole hospital is involved during a

pandemic; it takes a considerable team effort with every aspect of planning and handling an

event be such as COVID 19.
