Activity 7

Directions: Read the legend entitled, “Legend of Mariang Makiling” by Jose Rizal. Answer the following
questions. (pg. 183-188)

1. Who was Mariang Makiling? Describe her.

She was a young woman who lived on the beautiful mountain that separates the provinces of Laguna and
Tayabas. She was a young woman, tall and graceful, with big black eyes and long abundant hair. Her
color was a clear, pure brown, the kayumangging kaligatan, as the Tagalog says. Her hands and feet
were small and delicate, and the expression of her countenance always grave and serious. She was a
fantastic creature, half nymph, half sylph. Maria Makiling always remained pure, simple, and
mysterious, as the genius mountain. Maria Makiling was very charitable and had a good heart.

2. What were the two versions regarding her dwelling place?

Her dwelling place was never definitely known because those who had the good fortune deal with her
would wander about for a long time lost in woods, neither have they remembered the way, nor are they
agreed as to the place and its description. While some say that her home was a beautiful place,
surrounded by gardens and fine parks, others assert that they saw only a wretched hut with a patched
roof and bamboo sides. Such a contradiction may give rise to the belief that both parties are romancing,
it is true; but it may also be due to the fact that Maria Makiling, like many persons in comfortable
circumstances, might have had two dwelling places.

3. What stories about Mariang Makiling show that she was a mysterious, fantastic woman? Pick out the
details that show that she was not of this earth.

She was a fantastic creature, half nymph, half sylph. An old maid servant assured me that in her
childhood she had seen her passing in the distance that she did not even make flexible blades bend.

4. What explanations were given to Mariang Makiling’s disappearance and her lost contact with mankind?
Which one is considered probable?

Some place the blame for this on the resident of a certain town who not only refused to give the
customary white hen but even failed to return the finery borrowed. And did not return her generosity.

5. What reasons did Mariang Makiling have for giving up the young man she had fallen in love with?

Is because the young man needs an earthly love, and he have lacked the courage to face a hard fate or to
depend his liberty and make his self-independent in the bosom of the mountains and he has no
confidence in Maria Makiling’s protections.
6. Was it possible for her to marry the young man? Why?

No not possible for her to marry the young man. Because she is the nymph in their mountains.
7. Why did the young man agree to marry the girl who lived nearby? Do you believe those to be good
reasons? Explain your answer.

The young men agree to marry the girl who lived nearby. Because first to free himself from the
conscription, and then in order not to leave his aged parents unprotected.

No I don’t. Because his marrying the girl that out of love but by necessity only.
8. How did the townsfolk explain the young man’s good fortune?

Some attributed such good fortune to certain charms or amulets, others to the protection of a saint, and
still others to the heaven that protects and rewards good children.

9. Give the meaning of the word in bold letters found in these sentences (9 and 10). The mothers married
off their sons so the they (the sons) could evade conscription.

Compulsory enlistment for state service, typically into the armed forces.
10. The young man possessed a simple and noble heart but he was taciturn.
