Power Below The Waves: Transformers at Depths of 3 KM

ABB is the only company that can deliver transformers capable of operating at depths of up to 3km below the sea. As more infrastructure is placed on the seafloor, there is an increasing demand for electrical power in deep sea environments. ABB has delivered subsea transformers since 1998 to power equipment like compressors and pumps located far from shore power supplies. Their transformers are engineered to withstand the extreme pressures and hazardous conditions on the seafloor through liquid-filled and pressure-compensating designs.

Transformers at depths of 3 km ESA VIRTANEN, ALPER AKDAG – As engineers place ever
more infrastructure under our seas, the demand for
electrical power there rises correspondingly. Central to
any electrical power system is the transformer. ABB is
the only company in the world delivering transformers
that work at depths of up to 3 km. Just how does one
design a transformer to work in such a remote and
hostile environment?
