MENG 263
TUTORIAL # 7 (Chapter 7)

Q1. It is known that 1500 revolutions are required for the 2720-kg flywheel to coast to
rest from an angular velocity of 300 rpm. Knowing that the radius of gyration of
the flywheel is 914 mm, determine the average magnitude of the couple due to
kinetic friction in the bearings. ( Ans. 118.977 N.m)

Q2.The 400-kg flywheel of a punching machine has a radius of gyration of 750 mm.
Each punching operation requires 2700 J of work. (a) Knowing that the speed of
the flywheel is 200 r/min just before a punching, determine the speed immediately
after the punching. (b) If a constant 35 Nm couple is applied to the shaft of the
flywheel, determine the number of revolutions executed before the speed is again
200 r/min. ( Ans. a) 194.42 rev/min, b) 12.28 rev)

Q3. The double pulley shown has a total mass of 6 kg and a

radius of gyration of 140 mm. Five collars, each of
mass 1.5 kg, are attached to cords A and B as shown.
When the system is at rest and in equilibrium, one
collar is removed from cord A. Knowing that the
bearing friction is equivalent to a couple M of
magnitude 0.5 m, determine the velocity of cord A after
it has moved 900 mm. (Ans. 1.029 m/s up)

Q4. A 3 kg slender rod of length L = 0.75 m is supported as

shown. If the cable at B is cut determine the angular
velocity of the rod as it first passes through a vertical
position and the corresponding reaction at the pin
support. (Ans.6.26 rad/s, 73.6 N)

Q5. A motor supplies a constant torque M = 6 kN m to the

winding drum that operates the elevator. If the elevator
has a mass of 900 kg, the counterweight C has a mass
of 200 kg, and the winding drum has a mass of 600 kg
and radius of gyration about its axis of = 0.6 m,
determine the speed of the elevator after it rises 5 m
starting from rest. Neglect the mass of the pulleys.

(Ans. 2.1 m/s)

Q6. The girl having a weight of 550 N is sitting on a swing
such that when she is at A, θ = 45°, she is momentarily
at rest and her center of gravity is at G. If she keeps this
same fixed (rigid) position as she swings downward,
determine the angular velocity of the swing when she
reaches the position θ = 15°. Her radius of gyration
about an axis passing through G is 0.54 m.

(Ans. 1.05 rad/s)

Solve problems Q7,Q8 and Q9 using conservation

of energy method

Q7. When the slender 10-kg bar AB is horizontal

it is at rest and the spring is unstretched.
Determine the bar’s angular velocity when it
is released and has rotated downward 90°.
Take k = 5 N/m. (Ans. 4.16 rad/s)

Q8. The 250-N wheel has a radius of gyration

about its center of gravity G of kG = 0.21 m.
If it rolls without slipping, determine its
angular velocity when it has rotated
clockwise 90° from the position shown. The
spring AB has a stiffness k = 20 N/m and an
unstretched length of 0.15 m. The wheel is
released from rest. (Ans. 1.82 rad/s)

Q9. The 125-N slender rod AB is attached to a

spring BC which has an unstretched length of
1.2 m. If the rod is released from rest when θ
=30°, determine its angular velocity at the
instant θ = 90°. (Ans. 0.928 rad/s)
Solve the following problems using principle of
Impulse and Momentum method

Q10. The 320 kg flywheel of a small hoisting

engine has a radius of 600 mm. If the power
is cut off when the angular velocity of the
flywheel is 100 rpm clockwise, determine the
time required for the system to come to rest.

(Ans. 5.21 Sec.)

Q11. Two identical 8-kg uniform cylinders of

radius r = 100mm are at rest when a couple
M of constant magnitude 5 N m is applied to
cylinder A. Slipping occurs between the two
cylinders and between cylinder B and the
horizontal surface. Knowing that the
coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.5 between
the two cylinders and 0.2 between cylinder B
and the horizontal surface, determine the
angular velocity of each cylinder after 5 s.

(Ans. ωA = 134.5 rad/s CW, ωB = 981.1 rad/s

CCW)

Q12. A flywheel is rigidly attached to a 38-mm-

radius shaft that rolls without sliding along
parallel rails. Knowing that after being
released from rest the system attains a speed
of 132 mm/s in 30 s, determine the centroidal
radius of gyration of the system.

(Ans. 0.85 m)
