METHOD STATEMENT

 Cold Marking Materials

Jotun Acrylic Based Road Marking Paint is a quick drying, solvent based
paint. Based on solvent based acrylic resin. Can be used for marking
roads and kerbs. Easy to apply. It has UV resistant colours. Ideal for use
on asphalt and concrete roads, primarily for kerbstones, speed humps
or other areas with light traffic. It can be use for both Roads and kerbs
painting. The temperature of the substrate should be minimum 10 °C
and at least 3 °C above the dew point of the air, measured in the vicinity
of the substrate. Good ventilation is usually required in confined areas
to ensure proper drying. The moisture content in the substrate should
not exceed 4 % (by weight). The coating should not be exposed to oil,
chemicals or mechanical stress until fully cured.Drying times are
generally related to air circulation, temperature, film thickness and
number of coats, and will be affected correspondingly.Recommended
data given is, for recoating with the same generic type of paint. In case
of multi-coat application, drying times will be influenced by the number
and sequence and by the total thickness of previous coats applied. The
surface should be dry and free from any contamination prior to
application of the subsequent coat.

METHOD STATEMENT

9- Prior Activities

a. The Client Surveyor will locate and mark all Centerlines for all types .
b. Width and length for all types must be marked.

10- Procedure

I. Road Marking By Thermoplastic Material

A) Preparation of Road Surface

The material shall be applied only on a surface which is clean and dry. It
shall not be laid over loose detritus, mud or similar extraneous matter,
or over an old paint marking, or over an old thermoplastic marking which
is faulty. New surfaces must be allowed to weather and compact for at
least 72 hours before applying the marking. In the case of smooth
polished surfaces, e.g. smooth concrete, old asphalt surfacings with
smooth polished surface stones, and/or where the method of application
requires or the Engineer directs, a tack coat shall be applied to the
surface prior to the application. The tack coat shall be as recommended
by the manufacturer of the thermoplastic material and to the approval of
the Engineer. Faulty thermoplastic markings shall be removed if required
by the Engineer.

B) Preparation of Thermoplastic Material

The material shall be melted in accordance with the manufacturer’s

instructions in a heater fitted with a stirrer to give a smooth consistency
to the thermoplastic and such that local overheating shall be avoided.
The temperature of the mass shall be within the
range specified by the manufacturer and shall on no account be allowed
to exceed the maximum temperature stated by the manufacturer. The
molten material shall be used as expeditiously as possible and for
thermoplastics which have natural resin binders or are otherwise
sensitive to prolonged heating, the material shall not be maintained in a
molten condition for more than 4 hours.

MIDDLE EAST ROAD MARKING Page 12

METHOD STATEMENT

C) Laying of Thermoplastic Material

Markings may be applied by hand-screeding, hand propelled machine or

by self propelled machine as approved or directed by the Engineer. After
transfer to the laying apparatus the material shall be maintained within
the temperature range specified by the manufacturer and stirred to
maintain the right consistency for laying.

In the case of screeded application, material shall be laid to a thickness

of not less than 3 mm or more than 6 mm, unless specifically authorised
by the Engineer. In the case of sprayed application, the material shall be
laid to a thickness of not less than 1.5 mm unless specifically authorised
by the Engineer. In all cases, the surface produced shall be uniform,
appreciably free from bubbles and streaks.

The Contractor shall not proceed with the marking work until the
equipment, method of application, and rate of application, as established
by a test section, have been approved by the Engineer.

The work shall be carried out very carefully to a regular alignment in

accordance with the Drawings. Straight edges and templates shall be
used if required by the Engineer.

Where applicable the Ballotini (glass beads) shall be applied to the

surface of the thermoplastic immediately application is complete and
shall be applied in a controlled manner by use of a spreading device
which will permit an even spread from a fixed height of between 300mm
and 400mm or otherwise as the Manufacturer may recommend. (A wheel
mounted, variable width, funnel applicator may be suitable). The loss of
glass beads after 3 weeks traffic shall not exceed 10 percent of the total
applied.

D) Re-use of Thermoplastic Material

At the end of the day’s work, as much as possible of the material

remaining in the heater and/or laying apparatus shall be removed. This
may be broken and used again, provided that the maximum heating
temperature has not been exceeded and that the total time during which
it is in a molten condition does not exceed the requirements.

1.Wet Film Thickness – 150 microns 2 Coats (300 microns by Spray)

2.Dry Film Thickness – 60 microns 2 Coats (120 microns by Spray)

B) Materials

Jotun Acrylic Based Road Marking Paint

C) Plant & Equipment

Line Lazer (Cold Road Marking Painting Machine)

D) Surface Preparation (Main Contractor)

Washed and dry, clean, clear dust-free virgin surface

E) Applications:

E.1 Machine Application:

 Set marking machine in the correct position along the alignment of marking
 Spray the Line with Line Lazer Machine at the rate of 300 microns – wet film
thickness, i.e. 120 microns – dry film thickness.
 Spray Glass Beads at the rate of approximate 300g/m2 (Drop-on Method)
 Remove the masking tape after 20 minutes

E.2 Manual Application (Double Application)

 Mask the perimeter of the line with masking tape Apply Paint with roller or brush
after drying the first application. Repeat the same and apply glass beads.
