1. CRANE CONTROL

1.1 The crane is provided with an open control platform on the side of the
crane house.
The control station norm ally consists of 3 joysticks levers (hoist-slewing-
luffing).
All motions have step less speed control from 0 to max.
Two motions may be operated at the same time with full capacity , but
with reduced speed .

2. SAFETY SYSTEMS

The main hydraulic circuit is protected by relief valves .

Hook stop
The hook movemen t will be automa ticall y stopped in top and bottom

The luffing cylinder is designed for safe buffering in the extreme
positions .

2.4 Fail Safe Brakes

Both winch gear and slewing gears are provided with fail-safe disc
brakes .
The brakes are spring operated and pressure released .

Winch motor, hydraulic cylinder and slewing motor are all provided
with load holding valves which will freeze the movement in case of hose
ru pture or other failure causing pressure drop .

An emergency stop is located close to the operator.

2.8 Safety railing

A safety railing is located around the operator platform .

3. MACHINERY

3.1 Slewing machinery

Consist of a ball or roller tyoe slewing seated on machined surfa ces .
Slewing ring bolts and nuts are made from special alloy steel and
tightened to an exact tension .
The slewing bearings are all provided with internal gear ring .
Slewing gear box with brake and motor are built together to a complete
unit.

3.2 Luffing cylinder

The jib luffing cylinder(s) is designed for marine use with spherical
bronze bearings/composite bearings (lubrication-free) at both ends.

Cylinder piston rod is chromium-plated.

Hoisting machinery consist of:

Grooved drum with roller bearings and brackets .
Winch gear built into the drum with fail safe brake and hydraulic
motor.
Flange mounted load holding valve .
Flange mounted hydraulic hook stop .

The wire rope is of LOW-ROTATING type and galvanized .

All wire sheaves are provided with roller bearings.
All wire sheaves have grease nipple lubrication .

4. HYDRAULIC SYSTEM AND POWER PACK

4 .1 The hydraulic power is supplied from separate power p ack on

4.2 Hydraulic pipes and hoses

All external mounted pipes (under 016mm diameter) are of stainless
steel type .
Hydraulic fittings are of the EO 2 type .
Hydraulic hoses are made from rubber types with special good
resistance aga inst sea en vi ronment. All pressure hoses are tested with
50 % overpressu re before they are mounted on the cranes .

5. STEEL STRUCTURE

The structural steel used in our cra nes will be supplied with ce rtificates
accord ing to the chosen Classifica tion Society's requirements .

All primary steel materials are fully traceable .

The quality is selected in accordance with design rules or classification

societies requirements , to obtain necessary ductility for the lower temperature
design limit.

Important welds are carried out in accordance with welding procedures and
NOT checked before painting .

• Base column / Pedestal

Lower end of the base column/Pedestal is prepared for welding to deck.
It has a hatch for access to the in ternal of the pedestal.

Slewing Column/ Crane house

The slewing column/crane house is a fully enclosed structure , with the
Operators Platform fitted outside . The inside is accessible through a hatch
The top of the slewing column is provided with brackets for connection to the
jib . Connection is made by plain bearings . The slewing column is connected to
the pedestal through the slewing bearing .

Jib
The jib is made as a welded box structure with necessary internal stiffeners .
A cylinder bracket is welded to the under side of the jib .

CHECK LIST BEFORE START-UP

1) Check oil level.

2) Check that control levers / joysticks are in neutral

3) Check wire rope.

START-UP
1) When starting up at low temperature, le ss than - 1DoC, the oil
temperature should be lifted up to + 10° C before crane is used .

• 2) If crane have special aggrega te fo r heating the hydraulic o il , thi s

aggregate must be switched on and run for a time to lift oil temp
up to min. DoC before main pump is started.

3) Cranes not having special heating aggrega te should be sta rted

and run on idling condition until tempe rature is lifted to +1O° C .
CRANE OPERATION
1) Check that hoist wi re run correctly through th e wi re shea ves.

2) Check functions of limit switches.

3) Mov e handl es and joysticks gently.

Th e load must not be lifted off the ground / deck by means of the luffi ng motion.

This crane has been designed for emergen cy operation in case of loss of power.
Ref.: Hydraulic diagram , see section 4.

Lowering of winch

1) Connect hand pump 's suction line (1 /2" hose) to suction connector 409 in
tank wall or to a bucket of hydraulic oil if crane is connected to main ring system.
(NOTE! An alternatively quick connector on the suction line must be dismantled
before putting suction hose into the bucket. )

•
Pressure line (3/8" hose) shall be connected to pos. no: 408.
Weight in hook 50 % - 100% SWL.

2) If valve 108 (under main valve inlet) is a ball type instead of non-return type,
this must be closed. (Will normally be non-return , but ball type on ring main connected
cranes. )

3) If possible open bypass valve pos. no : 107 on win ch.

4) Grab the winch operating lever and keep that in position for lower.
Alternatively use a small rope to keep it positioned .

5) Rise the pressure with hand pump and load will start lowering .
Lowering speed will be higher and more suitable if the bypass valve

•
(pos. no: 107) is opened .
Lowering will stop a few seconds after the hand pump is stopped .
If the lever for winch is set ba ck to neutral position will the lowering stop
immediately.

Lowering of jib

1) Open manual emergency lowering screw or shock valve adjusting screw on

valve pos. no : 204 by turning it out until cylinder starts moving.
Open carefull y and stand by with the tool ready to cl os e the valve if the
lowering speed has tenden cy to increase. (Speed increase is more likely
if the jib is lowered from a relatively high position .)

NOTE Retighten emergency lowering screw to closed position or

The hydraul ic system is of the ope n loop type and main valve is con nected to the
ship ' s-ring main sys tem via a swivel.

Oil flow can be directed to the different motions by pulling the manoeuvring handles.
Two fun ctions may be operated at the same time , but th en the max . speeds will be reduced.

• Th e winc h motor is equipped with a load contro l I pipe rupture valve secu ring that th e load w ill
not drop even in case of hose break. Th e winch is equipped with hydraulic limit swi tch va lves
making the hook stop automatica lly in top and bottom position.

Winding on drum
When winding a rope onto a machine drum or onto another reel, make certain that It bends In the same direction
The distance between take -up (drum) and pay-off (reel) should be kept as great as possible in order to reduce the
feet angle The drawing below is showing proper spooling direction on a drum or a reel Re-spool from top of one
reel to the top on another, or from the bottom of one re el to the bottom of another It IS also necessary to apply a
tensioning load to the rope to achieve good spooling . A simple brake such as a plank , rigg ed to rub against the reel
flanges , will provide ample rope tenSion throughout the winding for a small rope size For big rope sizes and long
lengths a proper unreeling stand with adjustable brake IS required ThiS will provide a suffiCient rope tension , and all
layers Will spool tight and true As a rule of thumb a back tension or braking force of 10% of working load is
su ffiCient

The end of the rope must be sec ured to the drum by sLich means as Will give the and attachment at least as much
strength as is specified by the equipment manufacturer There should be at least Ih ree dead turns remaining on th e

After Installing a new rope It is always advisable to run it through its opera ting cycle several limes under lig h t load a
at reduced speed . This allows the new rope to adjust itself gradually to working condi tions and enables the strands
to become settled, for some stretch to occur, and for the diameter to reduce slightly as the strands and core are

• compacted The rope is then less liable to be damaged when full load IS applied The time spent on runnll1g In a
wire rope will be more than regained by the extra service that will be obtained .

MAINTENANCE
Proper maintenance of the eqUipment over which the ropes operate has an Important bearing on rope life Worn
grooves , poor alignment of sheaves and worn parts resulting 111 shock loads and excessive vibra tion will have a
deteriorating effect Sheaves and grooved rollers should be checked periodically for wear In the grooves which may
cause pinching and abraSion of the ropes If the groove bears the imprint of the rope , it should be machined clean
or replaced with a sheave of harder material The same applies to drums showing similar effect Sheave and roller
bearing should be checked for free rota lion Sticking will cause unnecessary wear ExceSSive wear in sheave
bearings can cause rope fatigue from Vibration

Storage
Both galavanized and bright ropes should be stored at an even temperature In a dry place For lengthy storage the
rope should be partlculary all lubricated Attention must be paid to the danger of condensa tion In the case of
outdoor storage under a tarpaulin . A rope that has been used must be cleaned , dried and lubricated before being
put into storage Ropes which have been exposed to sea water should be washed in fresh water.

The lubrication new ropes receive dUring manufacture is adequate for initial storage and th e early stages of th e
ropes working life It mu st however be supplemented at regular Intervals Proper lubrica ti on IS important to th e
service life of the rope . The lubricant serves both as protection against corrosion and as a fa ctor to reduce the
Iricti on between wires and strand s In the rope Lubrican t should be free from acid and with no pernicIous Influence
either on the wires or on th e core The lubrican t must have a consisten cy that enables It to penetrate Into the rope
The rope must be clean before the lubricant is applied For ma Ximum penetration . the lubrica nt should be applied to
the rope where It «opens up » as It travels around a sheave or Winds on a drum If a planned program of regular
lubrica tion IS not carned out , the rope Will deteriorate rapidly as follows:
-Corrosion and pitting will occur causing a loss of steel area and , thus a loss in strength of the rope .
-The wires will become embrittled from excessive corro sion and will break easily during bending .
-Since each wire In the rope moves relative to the others during operation . they are subject to fricti ona l wea r Lack
of lubrica tion will Increa se the wear rate causing a marked reduction in strength from loss of steel area

Inspection and Maintenance

Inspection should be carried out weekly or where equipmen t is used infrequently,

Each time is used by th e operator.

• Every 500 operating hours or every 4 years ,

Hook and hook nut are to be dismantled,
Inspected and retested (proof loaded),

Thorough examination by a competent and trained person should be carried out annua ll y
on equipment for mobile and crawler cranes .

• Electric overhead travelling crane blocks at each inspection and service.

Particular attention to be paid to the following :

Wear in hook, centre pin , becket in threads in hook and nut.
Play in sheave bushes or bearings .
3. Spacer bolts , nuts and lynch pins.
4. Check for cracks in welds .
5. Co ndition of safety catch grease nipples.

If cracks or heavy gouges appear, th e equipmen t shou ld not be used and qua lified op inion
should be sought. If grooved and the section reduced by more than 5% the item should be
replaced . Repairs should be by grinding . NO welding should be carried out unless prior
au th ority is obtained from TTS-Marine ASA.

If the holes in cross head , side plates , becket, eyes or yaws are enlarged by more than

TTS-Norlift AS ., or manufactured under their instruction .
All repairs to be carried out by responsible personnel and great care shou ld be ta ken in th e
