Flanges Presentation - Pps

The document discusses different types of flanges used in piping systems, including weld neck flanges, slip-on flanges, lap joint flanges, reducing flanges, expanding flanges, socket weld flanges, threaded flanges, and blind flanges. It also covers flange facings like raised face and ring joint, finishing styles like serrated and smooth, common materials used, and how to select flange ratings and dimensions according to standards.

• Blind Flange
Types of Flanges
• Weld Neck-
– Long WN-used for vessels,equipment nozzles&
thermowell connections,rarely for pipes
– Regular WN-used with BE pipes & BW fittings
– Normally used under severe cyclic conditions
– Used extreme temp.,shear,impact & vibratory stresses
apply as it support such stresses
– Costlier & difficult to align
– used for dangerous fluids
Types of Flanges

Types of Flanges
• Slip-On:
– Used in case of space constraints
– Normally used to flange pipe and also with elbow,
reducers and swages (not usual practice)
– alignment is easier than that of WN
– poor resistance to shock & vibration
– irregularity in bore
– cheaper to buy & costlier to assemble than that of WN
Types of Flanges
• Slip-On:
It is double-welded when the service is
1.subject to severe erosion, crevice corrosion or cyclic
loading
2.flammable, toxic or damaging human tissues
3.under severe cyclic conditions
4.at temp below –101deg C (-150deg F)

This type of flange to be avoided where large temp cycles are

expected, particularly if flange is not insulated.
Types of Flanges
Types of Flanges
• Lap Joint:
-used in case of SS & HDPE pipes
-it is economical to use CS flange and Stub
will be in line material as it is expensive to use SS flange.
-easy for quick assembly & disassembly
-there are two types of stubs-long stub and short stub
Types of Flanges
• Lap Joint
Types of Flanges
• Reducing Flange:
– Used as an alternative for WN flange with reducer
– Not used if abrupt transition create undesirable
turbulence as in pump connections
Types of Flanges
• Reducing Flange
Types of Flanges
• Expanding Flange:
– Used as an alternative for WN flange with expander
– shall not be used under severe cyclic conditions
– if the fluid is toxic or damaging to human
tissue,safeguarding is required
– consideration to be given to tightness of expanded
joints
Types of Flanges
• Expanding Flange
Types of Flanges
• Socket Weld Flange:
– Normally used for smaller sizes
– to avoid for services where erosion or corrosion may
occur
– not to use for service above 500oF & below -50oF
Types of Flanges
• Socket Weld Flange
Types of Flanges
• Threaded Flange:
– Normally used for smaller sizes
– Used if heat treatment is difficult with alloy steel
– to avoid for services where erosion or corrosion may
occur
– not to use for service above 500oF & below -50oF
– consideration to be given to stresses
– provision to be given for counteract forces which
would tend to unscrew joints
Types of Flanges
• Threaded Flange
Types of Flanges
• Blind Flange:
– used to blind the line,e.g header line, future line
Facing
• Raised Face
-0.06 in-used for 75# & 150#
-0.25 in-used from 400# to 900#
• Flat Face-used for non-steel flanges
• Ring Joint-efficient for high temp. & high
pressure services
• Tongue and Groove
• Small male and female
Finishing
• Serrated-Concentric & Spiral
• Smooth-No definite tool marking visible
through naked eye

Materials
Material Standards
• ANSI B16.5 - Flange sizes 0.5-24”
• ANSI B16.47 - Flange sizes 26-60”

Rating
• Rating Calculation :
Pt = PrSi < = Pc
8750
where Pt - Rated working pressure (psi),
Pi - Class in psi (150 or 300 etc)
Si - Selected stress in psi
Pc - Ceiling pressure in psig (from B16.5/B16.47)
Hub Thickness at welding end = > thickness calculated
for pipe having 40ksi,yield strength
