Ratio and Proportion Questions Solved

The document provides solutions to 20 ratio and proportion problems. The problems involve finding ratios between given quantities, sharing amounts according to given ratios, and determining quantities when ratios change. The high-level ratio concepts demonstrated include setting up ratios as fractions equal to each other, cross-multiplication to solve ratios, and determining new ratios when original quantities change by percentages. Assignment 4 – Ratio

solutions

Solve the following:

1. If a : b = 3 : 7 and b : c = 5 : 9, find a : b : c.

Ans. -a:b:c=(3×5):(7×5):(9×7)

a:b:c=15:35:63

2. If A : B = 4 : 9 and B : C = 3 : 6 , find A : C.

Ans - A:B:C=(4×3):(9×3):(6×9)
A:B:C=12:27:54

3. Find the mean proportional between given two numbers that is 64 and 49.

Ans- Square root of 64 and 49= 56

4. Share Rs.4200 among Jay, Sanjay and Bijay in the ratio 2 : 4 : 6.

Ans- For jay- (2/12)x4200 = 700

For sanjay- (4/12)x4200 = 1400
For bijay- (6/12)x4200 = 2100

5. Rs 1210 were divided among three person P, Q, R so that P:Q = 5:4 and Q:R = 9:10. Then how much R
gets?

Ans - P:Q = 5:4

& Q: R = 9:10
P/Q = 5/4X9/9 = 45/36 & Q/R = 9/10X4/4 = 36/40

P:Q:R =45:36 :40

so, let amt received by R be 40

* R 's amount =

402 x 1210 Total ratio (40/121)x1210 = 400

Amount received by R= 400

6. Two numbers are respectively 20% and 50% more than a third number. Find the ratio of the two
numbers.

Ans Let the third number be x. Then, 1st num = 120% of x =120x/100 = 6x/5

2ndnum=150% of x = 150x/100 = 3x/2

Ratio of first two numbers = 6x/5 : 3x/2 = 12x : 15x = 4 : 5

7. Seats for Mathematics, Physics and Biology in a school are in the ratio 5 : 7 : 8. There is a proposal to
increase these seats by 40%, 50% and 75% respectively. What will be the ratio of increased seats?

Ans- let the number of seats for Mathematics, Physics and Biology be 5x, 7x and 8x.
Number of increased seats are (140% of 5x), (150% of 7x) and (175% of 8x).
=[(140/100)×5x],[(150/100)×7x] and [(175/100)×8x]
= 7x,21x/2 and 14x.

= The required ratio =7x:21x/2:14x

= 14x:21x:28x
=2:3:4

8. In a mixture 60 litres, the ratio of milk and water 2 : 1. If this ratio is to be 1 : 2, then find the
quantity of water to be further added.

Ans-Quantity of Milk = 60*(2/3) = 40 liters

Quantity of water = 60-40 = 20 liters

As per question we need to add water to get quantity 2:1

=40/(20+x) = 1/2
= 20 + x = 80
= x = 60 liters

9. The ratio of the number of boys and girls in a college is 7 : 8. If the percentage increase in the
number of boys and girls be 20% and 10% respectively, what will be the new ratio?

Ans- Originally, let the number of boys and girls in the college be 7x and 8x respectively.
Their increased number is (120% of 7x) and (110% of 8x).
= (120/100) *7X and (110/110)*8x
42x 44x
= and
5 5
42x 44x
The required ratio = : = 21 : 22.
5 5

10. When 40% percent of a number is added to another number the second number increases to its 20%.
What is the ratio between the first and second number?

Ans - let 1st no. be x and another be y. Then acc. To ques.

0.4x+y = 1.2y
0.4x= 0.2y=>x/y=2/4=1/2
