Practical Ointment

The document provides instructions for preparing three topical formulations: compound benzoic acid ointment to treat fungal infections, cold cream as a protective and emollient emulsion, and vanishing cream as an oil-in-water emulsion that leaves a thin, invisible layer on the skin. Procedures are provided for each that involve accurately measuring and combining ingredients like benzoic acid, salicylic acid, beeswax, liquid paraffin, borax, stearic acid, and potassium hydroxide, and heating and stirring the mixtures to form emulsions. Uses, storage conditions, and definitions are also stated for each formulation.

Compound Benzoic acid ointment BP

(Whitfield’s Ointment)

Aim: Prepare and submit10g of compound benzoic acid ointment B.P.

Definition:
Benzoic acid contains not less than 99.0 percent and not more than the
equivalent of 100.5 percent of benzenecarboxylic acid.

S.N. Ingredients QTY. FOR 100 g QTY. FOR ………..

1 Benzoic acid 3g
2 Salicylic acid 6g
3 Emulsifying ointment 91g

Procedure:
Pass the medicaments through sieve number 180 using a stainless steel type for
the salicylic acid. Mix the required amounts lightly on a tile, levigate with a little base
until smooth and dilute gradually.

Use: Fungicidal

Cold Cream

Definition: Cold cream is an emulsion, which when applied on the skin, slow
evaporation of water causes a pleasant cooling sensation and hence the cream given
the name ‘Cold Cream’.
They are generally prepared by emulsification of oil and water. Cold creams are
O/W type emulsion but after application on the skin, sufficient water evaporates to
permit phase inversion to W/O type.

Prepare and submit 10g of cold cream

S.N. FORMULA QTY. FOR 100 g QTY. FOR ………..

1 White bees Wax 10g
2 Liquid paraffin 30g
3 Borax 0.5g
4 Perfume qs
5 Purified water 9.5ml

Procedure:

Melt the bees wax in a china dish and add liquid paraffin to it. Heat it until
temperature rises to 700C. Dissolve the borax in a calculated amount of water and
increase the temperature of aqueous solution to 700C. Add aqueous part to the oil part
and stir continuously until a creamy emulsion is formed, cool it slowly and add perfume
at room temperature and dispense.

Use: Protective and emollient.

Storage:To be stored in a well-closed container and kept in a cool place.

Vanishing Cream

Definition: These are oil-in-water type emulsions which when applied to the skin leaves
an almost invisible layer on it. Hence they are called “Vanishing Creams”.
These creams can be quickly washed off with water due to presence of O/w
emulsifiers. Vanishing creams are prepared by emulsification of stearic acid and water
by means of alkalies such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, borax,
triethanolamine, etc. The main ingredient in Vanishing creams is stearic acid, which give
a pearly white shining appearance to the cream, which on application gives a thin white
film of free Stearic acid.

Prepare and submit 10g of Vanishing Cream

S.N. Ingredients QTY. FOR 100 g QTY. FOR ………..

1 Stearic acid 18g
2 Potassium hydroxide 1g
3 Glycerol 5g
4 Lavender oil qs
6 Purified water 76ml

Procedure: Stearic acid is melted over a water bath and maintains the temperature at
700C. Dissolve potassium hydroxide is required quantity of water and it is heated to
700C. The temperature of aqueous solution and stearic acid are maintaining the same.
Add the oil part to the aqueous part continue the stirring until to form a cream then it is
cooled and the perfume is added with stirring.

Principle: Stearic acid acts as base, Pot. Hydroxide reacts with free fatty acid present in
stearic acid to form soap, which acts as an emulgent. Glycerin acts as an emollient and
anti-drying agent and water acts as Vehicle.

Storage: It is stored in a well-closed container.

Uses: It is used as an emollient and protective. It is applied on the face before applying
face powder so that the face powder will remain longer time.
