Chapter 3 - Specific Issues in STS

1. The information discusses the impact of biodiversity loss on human life. 2. As human population and technology have grown, they have put extreme pressure on natural species and habitats through pollution, habitat destruction, overexploitation of plants and animals, and energy consumption. 3. This threatens biodiversity and human well-being by reducing ecosystem services like clean air and water.

Chapter III

Specific Issues in Science,

Technology & Society
Lesson1: The Information Age
Lesson 2: Biodiversity and Healthy Society
Lesson 1: The Information Age
The information age, also called computer age, digital
and the new media age is characterized by the rapid
shift from traditional industry.

• Marked by a very fast growth in communication and information

technology
• The invention of computer gave people access to information
with the touch of a button
• The internet has tuned the society into homebodies and
individuals who do everything from the comfort of their lives
The Information Age

Historical Development
4 periods of Information Age:

Pre – Mechanical Electro- Electronic

Mechanical ( 1450 – 1840 ) Mechanical Information
(3000 BC–1450 ( 1840 – 1940 ) ( 1940 to present )
AD)

Claide Shannon is the Father of Information Age

The Information Age

Historical Development
• Internet was developed during the 1970s. It was used mainly by
scientist to communicate with other scientists. Internet users
problem was speed. As years goes by, the development of fiber-
optic hastened the rate of sending the message.
• By the end of 1980s, personal computers had become widespread
which can be connected to local or national networks.
• In the 1990s, the World Wide Web (WWW) was developed as for
commercial purposes. As the years goes by, new services were for
other purposes (to sell products, research and the likes)
Advantages of Living in the Information Age
1. Globalization – it has brought the world closer together, led to
sharing information more quickly and efficiently and enabled
countries to share ideas and information with each other
2. Communication – it has made the communication cheaper,
quicker and more efficient. The use of internet opened face-to-face
communication from different parts of the world
3. Cost-effectiveness – it has led to computerization of business
processes and increased productivity that gave more profits, better
pay and working conditions
4. Creation of new jobs – it has led to opening up of opportunity for
computer programmers, system analysts, hardware and software
developers and web designers

Changes in different aspects of peoples lives:

1. Emergence of online companies

2. Creation of economically and stimulating businesses
3. More mature and educated people
4. Reshaping governments with new technologies
Lesson 2: Biodiversity and Healthy Society
The planet earth share trillions of varied species:
• Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms from all
sources and the ecological complexes of which they are part;
this includes diversity within species, between species, and of
ecosystems.
• Biodiversity forms the foundation of the vast array of
ecosystem services that critically contribute to human well-
being.
• Biodiversity is important in human-managed as well as natural
ecosystems.

Impact of Biodiversity on Human Life

1. Human Population Growth

2. Pollution and Destruction in Environment
3. Destruction of Habitat
4. Exploitation of Animals and Plants
5. Signs of Environmental Contamination
6. Consumption of Energy
7. Fossils for Fuels
Impact of Biodiversity on Human Life
• The development of medical technology has reduced the incidence
of disease in many parts of the world
• Modern agriculture had reduced the incidence of disease in many
parts of the world
• Modern agriculture had reduced the likelihood of starvation in
developed nations

The rapid increase in human population and technology that

supports the growth has put extreme pressures on the natural world,
threatening the survival of natural species and habitats.

Human Population Growth

Impact of Biodiversity on Human Life
• Due to human’s ability to use technology, the human population or
growing virtually unchecked by the natural factors that limit other
species population
• Human technologies produce materials that pollutes the air, water
and soil
• Human activities are increasingly displacing or destroying natural
habitats and other ecological communities, reducing biodiversity
and endangering the survival of many Earth’s living things.
It is essential that we understand the necessity of preserving the
natural environment and its living species as a means of our own
survival

Human Population Growth

Impact of Biodiversity on Human Life
• Technological and industrial processesled to the production of
chemicals and by-products that are harmful to living things which
contributed to our global environment pollution
• These pollutants contaminate water, air, and soil and make survival of
natural species difficult or even impossible
Pollution and Destruction in Environment
Impact of Biodiversity on Human Life
• Humans have used their technologies to remove trees and other plant
life from wide areas of their natural habitat for the purpose of creating
Destruction of Habitat

agricultural lands, industrial zones, roadways or residential and

commercial developments
• Those activities have had the effect of displacing plant and animal
species important to the maintenance of ecosystem
Impact of Biodiversity on Human Life
Exploitation of Plants and Animals
• Humans have removed plants from the ecosystem for their economic
values without regard for the effect of its removal on the natural
ecosystem
• This has negatively impacted the ecosystem by decreasing biodiversity
( variety of life) in these habitats.

Signs of Environmental Contamination

• Toxic chemicals by-products, heavy metals, pesticides, hormones,
pharmaceuticals and other contaminants are responsible for an
increased frequency in deformation of illnesses, death of natural
populations worldwide.
Impact of Biodiversity on Human Life
Consumption of Energy
• Worldwide industrialization has brought an increased demand for use
of energy resources
• Because of this demand, energy sources has changed and developed
that often uses agricultural land for the construction, storage and
transport of energy they produce.

Fossils for Fuels

• The chemical by-products of fossil fuel combustion are released into
the atmosphere and contribute to the worldwide air pollution that
results to acid rain
• Burning of fossil fuels is also linked to global warming
