WHAT YOU'LL NEED: Scissors, Elmer's glue (or a glue stick), a pen or pencil, a ruler or other straight-edge, a piece
of thick corrugated cardboard at least 7 X 9 inches in size, a utility knife for cutting the cardboard, a black marker and
several pins.
FOLDING TIP: For the display frame, I recommend 'scoring' the fold lines before folding. You can use an old ink pen,
a knitting needle, the end of a paper clip, or any metal object that will make a crease on the fold lines without tearing
the paper. Scoring will help you fold much more quickly and precisely.
ASSEMBLY: Begin by deciding which spiders you want to include in your display. The frame can be used horizontally
(with the long sides on top and bottom) to display 1 large spider or 4 small spiders. Or you can use the frame vertically
(with the short sides on top and bottom) to display 2 medium spiders, 1 small and 1 medium spider, or 1 small and 1
large spider. You can also create your own arrangements, using as many or as few spiders as you wish.
After you've decided which spiders to use, cut out the spiders.
For each spider: Turn the spider upside down and trace around it with the black marker to darken the paper edges. (If
you want, you can also darken the unprinted side of the legs.) Curve the body slightly by folding it over a pen or pencil.
Bend the legs slightly upward where they join the body. Then fold sharply downward at each leg joint. Straighten the
legs back out so the spider resembles the one shown in Figure 1. (Note that the leg sections are slightly curved.)
After you've finished folding the spiders, cut out an INFO TAG (on Parts Page 9) for each spider. Set the spiders and
tags aside for a moment while we build the display frame.
Cut out the BACKGROUND on Parts Page 10, cutting along the outer black lines (do not remove the gray area).
Cut out the two FRAME SECTIONS on Parts Page 11. For each section: fold DOWNWARD between all five
panels, and then use the black marker to remove the blue fold lines. Glue the gray panel with the colored dot
directly over the opposite blank gray panel. The piece should now resemble Figure 2.
Place the two assembled FRAME SECTIONS over the gray areas on the BACKGROUND with matching
colored dots, as shown in Figure 3, and glue the two sections down.
Cut out the two FRAME SECTIONS on Parts Page 12. Assemble in the same manner as before and glue
both sections to the remaining gray areas on the BACKGROUND.
Cut out the four CORNER PIECES on Parts Page 9. Glue a corner piece over each corner of the frame, as
shown in Figure 4, to hold the frame together. (Use plenty of glue and press gently so the frame strips don't
collapse.)
Cut out the two PLAQUES on Parts Page 9 and add them to the top and bottom strips of the frame, as
shown in Figure 5. (This might be the long or short sides, depending on how you want to use the frame.)
Cut out the CARDBOARD TEMPLATE on Parts Page 13 and place it over the piece of thick corrugated
cardboard. Cut the cardboard to the size of the template and then place the cardboard on the back of the
display frame. The cardboard edges should be about a quarter on an inch in from the outer edges of the
display frame, as shown in Figure 6. Glue the cardboard to the back of the display frame. (The cardboard is
included so we can push pins into the background later.)
Now place your spiders and info tags where you want them on the background.
Push pins through the spiders' bodies (pushing up from the bottom and then re-inserting from the top, so the
body doesn't get flattened) and then push the pins into the cardboard as shown in Figure 7. (If the pins resist
piercing the cardboard, you can use pliers to help push them into place.) Finish each spider by adding a
small drop of glue to a few of the leg tips and gluing them down, so the spider will stay in position. After the
spiders are attached, glue the info tags to the background as shown in Figure 8.
And that's everything! Your spider display is ready to hang up and enjoy.
(Hang with poster mounting tape or a loop of masking tape.)
