Note:Use Figure 8.5 (Mosley and Bungey's Book) To Determine M and V

1. The document provides instructions for a tutorial on structural design of continuous beams and shear reinforcement. Students are asked to design reinforcement at specific locations for two continuous beam problems and answer additional questions. 2. The second problem defines a three-span continuous beam and asks students to design shear reinforcement for one of the spans. Reinforcement details are provided. 3. Additional questions cover differences between slab and beam design, shear stress distribution in beams, and factors considered in reinforcement anchorage design.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

SEMESTER 1 2015-16
ECV 3205 STRUCTURAL DESIGN
TUTORIAL 3
(Continuous Beam and Shear)

1 Design the main reinforcement at mid-span and interior supports and design the shear
reinforcement at interior support of continuous beam in Figure 1. Span = 5 m; size of beam
=230 mm x 450 mm; Grade of concrete = 30; Grade of reinforcement = 500; Total design
load =40 kN/m.

Note :Use Figure 8.5 (Mosley and Bungey’s book) to determine M and V.

2 If fck = 40 N/mm2, fyk = 500 N/mm2 and longitudinal reinforcement as given in Figure 2 below.
Design the shear reinforcement for span AB. The span lengths of a three-span continuous beam
ABCD are: exterior spans AB and CD, 8 m each; Interior span BC, 10 m. The characteristic
dead load (inclusive of self-weight) is 36 kN/m and characteristic imposed load is 45 kN/m.
The beam has a uniform rectangular section of width b = 350 mm, and effective depth d may
be taken as 800 mm.

Note: Detailing Notation: The first figure denotes the number of bars; the letter is the type of steel –H for
high yield steel. The number after the hypen is the identification bar mark. Example: 2H32 – 1 represents
two high yield bar of size 32 mm. The bar is identified as bar mark 1where in this example is bar size 32
that length of 3 m plus the projection into the span BC.

3 a) Slabs are subjected to bending and therefore are design in a same manner as beam.
PO1 Discuss some differences in slab design which make it simpler than beam.
(C3)
b) Shear stress of reinforced concrete beam is critical at‘d’ from face of support. Explain
why.

c) A reinforcement length in structural element is not based on bending moment alone but
also governs by the anchorage length, lapping and curtailments. Explain why we need
to check these in our design.

4 A multi-storey structure is to be constructed using a continuous one-way spanning slab system.

PO9 The layout of the proposed system is illustrated in Figure 3.
(A3)

a) Determine a preliminary depth for the slabs given a required fire resistance of 1 hour.
b) Comment on your proposed scheme.

5 The ordinary reinforced section illustrated in Figure 4 is subjected to a sagging moment.

PO3 Determine whether link reinforcement other than the minimum is required to resist an

applied factored shear force of 100 kN, given that the
fck = 35 N/mm2 and fyk = 500 N/mm2.

6. A reinforced concrete floor is to be composed of rectangular bays measuring

6 m x 5 m as shown in figure below. The floor is to be designed to carry a uniformly
distributed load of 3.0 kN/m2 and a finishing load equal to 1.0 kN/m2. The concrete strength is

30 N/mm2 and the steel grade is 5000 N/mm2. If the thickness of the slab is assumed 175 mm,
design the mid-span reinforcement in the critical direction of panel A and check the shear
resistance and deflection requirement according to BS 8110. Draw the detailing as well.
