3 PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS:

3.1 Review and become familiar with the entire procedure before beginning the Calibration Process.

WARNING

Unless otherwise designated, and prior to beginning the Calibration Process,

ensure that all test equipment voltage and/or current outputs are set to zero (0)
or turned off, where applicable. Ensure that all equipment switches are set to
the proper position before making connections or applying power.

NOTE

In order for the Oscillator to attain its specification, the TI shall be connected to
a source of power and turned on for at least 24 hours prior to calibration.

NOTE

The error associated with a frequency measurement consists of two parts:

±1 count of LSD and the ± Time Base error. The ± Time Base error is the part
contributed by the Crystal Oscillator and its associated circuitry. This error is a
direct result of changes in frequency of the Oscillator and is made up of
temperature effects, aging, and line voltage changes. This procedure will only
check Time Base errors related to Aging Effects.

3.2 Connect all test equipment to the appropriate power source and set all POWER switches to ON and allow a warm-
up time as required by the manufacturer.

3.3 Connect TI to appropriate power source and set POWER ON/STBY to ON. Verify all LEDs and annunciators
light for about 2 s, then all zeros.

3.4 Press SPECIAL FUNC and 09 to set TI to Internal Frequency Reference.

3.5 Perform TI manual Self Test as follows:

3.5.1 Press SPECIAL FUNC and 01; Display should indicate 200 000 MHz ±1 count.

3.5.2 Press SPECIAL FUNC and 02; Display should indicate all 8s and all annunciators should be lit.

3.5.3 Press SPECIAL FUNC and 03; Each display segment should light in turn (time adjustable by front panel
SAMPLE RATE setting).

4
T.O. 33K4-4-625-1

3.5.4 Press SPECIAL FUNC and 04; Each display digit should light in turn (time adjustable by the TI front panel
SAMPLE RATE setting).

3.6 Allow TI a 24 hour warm-up time before proceeding.

3.7 The Model 595A ( ) Power Measurement accuracies are typical. Annotate a Certification Label, Power Meter not
calibrated.

4 CALIBRATION PROCESS:

NOTE

Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective
action whenever the test requirement is not met, before proceeding.

4.1 FREQUENCY ACCURACY AND DISPLAY CALIBRATION:

NOTE

Adjustment of the Time Base Oscillator is normal due to the Aging Rate of the
crystal. This is common to all Quartz Oscillators. The adjustment actions taken
during this calibration will ensure the greatest reliability of the TI by adjusting
the time base reference frequency to the nominal value each time it is calibrated.

NOTE

The values in the following steps have been derived from multiplication of the
Aging Rate to determine the offset at six months, regardless of the length of the
calibration interval for this TI in T.O. 33K-1-100-1/2. The longest aging rate
specification, not to exceed six months, has been used to calculate the limits.

4.1.1 On TI press BAND and digit 0.

4.1.2 Connect the TI 10 MHz IN/OUT (rear panel) to the TI BAND 0 Input. Set TI controls as required for a stable
display on TI.

4.1.3 The TI must indicate 10 MHz ±1 count of LSD of the TI.

4.1.4 Disconnect the test setup.

4.1.5 Connect Frequency Standard 10 MHz REF OUT to the Electronic Counter EXT FREQ STD INPUT
(1-10 MHz).

4.1.6 Set Electronic Counter INT STD/EXT STD switch to EXT STD.

4.1.7 Connect TI 10 MHz IN/OUT to the Electronic Counter CHANNEL A input.

4.1.8 Set Electronic Counter 50Ω/1MΩ switch to 50Ω and GATE TIME as necessary for the resolution of the
following steps.

4.1.9 For Std TI, the Electronic Counter must indicate 9.999 994 to 10.000 006 MHz plus the offset as labeled on
the TCXO ±1 count of LSD of the Electronic Counter.

5
T.O. 33K4-4-625-1

4.1.10 For the TI OPT 5809, the Electronic Counter must indicate 9.999 999 to 10.000 001 MHz ±1 count of LSD
of the Electronic Counter.

4.1.11 Disconnect the test setup.

4.1.12 To ensure the reliability of the TI, the following action shall be taken: If TI passes the above steps, perform
the applicable adjustment steps in Appendix A, and enter NO ADJUSTMENT ACTION into the Maintenance Data
Collection System. If the TI failed, perform the applicable steps listed in Appendix A and enter the appropriate
ADJUSTMENT ACTION into the Maintenance Data Collection System.

4.2 FREQUENCY RANGE AND INPUT SENSITIVITY CALIBRATION: (Band 0)

NOTE

The TI Frequency and Display Accuracy was verified in para 4.1. In para 4.2,
4.3 and 4.4 the input sensitivity of the TI is verified across the required
frequency range at a minimum voltage level. TI controls may be adjusted as
required to verify these parameters.

4.2.1 Set TI controls as follows:

4.2.2 Connect the Frequency Synthesizer MAIN SIGNAL output to the TI BAND 0 input.

4.2.3 Set the Frequency Synthesizer controls for 100 Hz at 22.36 mV rms (-20.0 dBm).

4.2.4 Slowly increase the Frequency Synthesizer frequency from 100 Hz to 10 MHz and ensure TI counts properly
across the entire 100 Hz to 10 MHz frequency range at 22.36 mV rms (-20.0 dBm).

4.2.5 Verify the Frequency Synthesizer indicates ≤22.36 mV rms (-20.0 dBm) from 100 Hz to 10 MHz before TI
count becomes unstable.

4.2.6 Set Frequency Synthesizer for minimum output and disconnect test setup.

two ports (dependent upon frequency). Verify any failures by switching the
outputs to the TI and Power Meter. Readjust reference voltage to -20.0 dBm
and repeat step 4.2.10. Apply the method outlined, throughout the rest of this
procedure, as applicable, changing steps and reference voltage as required, to
verify any failures.
