The document is a physics problem about calculating the force and direction of tension on a stainless steel orthodontic wire used to brace a tooth. It provides the unstretched length and diameter of the wire, and the amount it is stretched. Using the Young's modulus of stainless steel and the formula for tension from stress and strain, it calculates that a 32.90 Newton force directed downward is needed to stretch the wire the given amount.

1.Carlo wants to brace his teeth. A stainless steel orthodontic wire is applied to his tooth, as in
the figure below. The wire has an unstretched length of 3.3 cm and a diameter of 0.24 mm. If
the wire is stretched 0.12 mm, find the magnitude and direction of the force on the tooth.
Disregard the width of the tooth and assume the Young’s modulus for stainless is 20×1010 Pa.

FLₒ
Solution: From Y¿ A ( ΔL) , the tension needed to stretch the wire by 0.12 mm is

YA( ΔL) Y ( π d 2 ) ( ΔL)

F= -
Lₒ 4 Lₒ
2
( 20 ×1010 Pa ) π ( 0.24 ×10−3 m ) (0.12 ×10−3 m)
=
4 (3. 3 ×10−2 m)

= 32.90 N
R= 32.90 N directed down the page in the diagram
