Please note that the processes of starting the program and creating
a new structure are explained in Chapter 2 only. These processes
are the same whether you choose to work in the STAAD/Pro GUI or
in the Command File. It is strongly recommended that you go
through both the tutorials in order to take the maximum advantage
of the features offered by STAAD/Pro.

2 Tutorial Problem 1
All STAAD/Pro Input data are stored in a Text file consisting of simple English-like
command language. This file is called Command File or Input File.
Section 2.4 describes creation of the Command File using the STAAD/Pro EDITOR.
The rest of Chapter 2 explain how the same commands may be specified using the
STAAD/Pro GUI.
This tutorial covers the following topics using both Command File
and the Graphical interfaces:
Tutorial Problem 1 3
• Viewing the Output File
• Verifying results on screen – both graphically and Numerically
The Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the Command File are
seamlessly integrated. When you access the Command File from the
STAAD/Pro GUI, the Command File reflects all data entered
through the GUI. On the other hand, when you modify and save the
Command File, the GUI immediately shows the changes made to
the structure through the Command File.

4 Tutorial Problem 1
The project is a single bay, single story steel portal frame that will
be analyzed and designed. The figure below shows the structure.
Figure 2. 1
You shall create a Command File for the above problem. The
commands used in the Command File have been described in the
following pages.
An input file called "INTRO.STD" containing the input data for the
above structure has been provided with your distribution.

Tutorial Problem 1 9
In the STAAD/Pro EDITOR, type the lines shown in bold below.
The commands may be typed in upper or lower case letters. Usually
the first three letters of a keyword are all that are needed -- the rest
of the letters of the word are not required. The required letters are
underlined. (“PLANE” = “PLA” = “plane” = “pla”)
Every STAAD/Pro input file has to begin with the word STAAD.
The word PLANE signifies that the structure is a plane frame (in
the XY plane). The remainder of the words are the title of the
problem, which is optional. This command is automatically
generated using the information you have provided in Section 2.3.
Specify the force and length units for the commands to follow. This
command is automatically generated using the information you
have provided in Section 2.3.

Main Window
This is the largest area at the center of the screen, where the model
and the results are displayed.
Page Control
The Page Control is a set of tabs that appear on the left-most part
of the screen. Each tab on the Page Control allows you to perform
specific tasks. The organization of the Pages, from top to bottom,
represents the logical sequence of operations, such as, definition of
beams, specification of member properties, loading, and so on.
Each tab has a name and an icon for easy identification. The name
on the tabs may or may not appear depending on your screen
resolution and the size of the STAAD/Pro window. However, the
icons on the Page Control tabs always appear.
Data Area
The right side of the screen is called the Data Area, where
different dialog boxes, tables, list boxes, etc. appear depending on
the type of operation you are performing. For example, when you
select the Geometry | Beam Page, the Data Area contains the Node-
Coordinate table and the Member-incidence table. When you are in
the Load Page, the contents of the Data Area changes to display the
currently assigned Load cases and the icons for different types of
loads.
The icons in the toolbar as well as in the Page Control area offer
Tooltip help. If you are not sure what a particular icon represents,
simply move your mouse on top of the icon and wait a moment. A
floating Tooltip help will identify the icon.

In the Isometric or Side view, use cursor to assign the Wind Loads
as described at the beginning of this section. For all the Loads
under this Load Case, use the Node ... button from the Loads dialog

adding the Selfweight Load Case with a multiplication factor of 1.1
and that the load combination results would be obtained by
algebraic summation of the results for individual load cases.

portal frames and the large unsupported length of the column. To
correct this problem you may add K bracings connecting the
columns to the bottom chords of the portal frames. However, this is

150 Tutorial Problem 2
The STAAD/Pro Command File (also called the Input file) provides
an alternative way to specify the Input data, Analysis/Design
Commands, and post-analysis outputs. The Command File is a Text
file which contains simple English Language commands. You may
choose to use the Graphical User Interface, the Command File, or
mix and match both facilities.
The Command File and the facilities to access the Command File
are explained in details in Chapter 3. The following portion of this
section explains the Command File generated for the Tutorial
problem 1. Please note that the Command File created in your case
may be slightly different from what is described next.
Every Command File has to begin with the word STAAD. The word
SPACE signifies that the structure is a space structure. The
remainder of the words are the title of the problem, which is
optional.

6 Example Problem 1
Although the program selects the most economical section for all
members, it is not always practical to use many different sizes in
one structure. The above GROUP command groups the members by
their input listing. This means that members 1, 3 and 4 will have
one size (i.e. largest of the three). The same is true for the other
groups too.
PERFORM ANALYSIS
PARAMETER
RATIO 1.0 ALL
TRACK 1.0 ALL
New set of parameter values are now provided. The actual stress to
allowable stress RATIO has been redefined as 1.0. The TRACK
parameter tells the program to print out the allowable stress values
as well. Note that the remaining parameter values provided earlier
remain unchanged.
With the above command, the latest member sizes with the latest
analysis results are checked to verify that they meet the CODE
specifications.
The above command instructs the program to list the length and
weight of all the different member sizes. This is useful for
estimation purposes.

98 Example Problem 12
Every input has to start with the word STAAD. The word FLOOR
signifies that the structure is a floor structure and the geometry is
defined through X and Z axis.
JOINT COORDINATES
1 0 0 0 6 25 0 0
R 5 0 0 30
MEMBER INCIDENCES
1 1 7 6
7 1 2 11
R A 4 11 6
56 31 32 60
Defines the members by the joints they are connected to. Fourth
number indicates the final member number upto which they will be
generated. Repeat all (abbreviated as R A) will create members by
repeating the member incidence pattern of the previous 11
members. The number of repetitions to be carried out is provided
after the R A command and the member increment and joint
increment are defined as 11 and 6 respectively. The fifth line of
input defines the member incidences for members 56 to 60.

Moving loads are defined above in FEET KIP units. The type
number (1) is a label for identification of the moving load. 3 loads
( 20 20 10) are specified with the LOAD command. The spacing
between them is specified after the DISTANCE command. The
WIDTH is the spacing in the other direction, that is, the moving
load is acting in 2 rows as in the case of a truck load.
LOAD 1
SELF Y -1.0
The above command will generate 10 load cases for the Type I
load. For the first of these load cases, the X, Y and Z location of
the reference load (see section 6.30.1 of the User's Manual) have
been specified after the command TYPE 1. A Z increment of 10
feet will be used to generate the remaining 9 load cases.
This command makes the program proceed with the analysis and
print all the generated load cases as member loads.

This is the second stage in which the UBC load is applied with the
help of load case number, corresponding direction and a factor by
which generated horizontal loads needs to be multiplied. Along
with the UBC load, deadweight is also added to the same load case.
Since we will be doing second-order PDELTA analysis, it is
important that we add horizontal and vertical loads in the same
load case.

Two different wind intensities (0.1 Kips/sq. ft and 0.15 Kips/sq. ft)
are specified for two different height zones (0 to 12 ft. and 12 to 24
ft.). The EXPOSURE specification is used to define the exposure
factors for joints subjected to wind loading. In this case, two
different exposure factors are specified. The first EXPOSURE
specification specifies the exposure factor as 0.9 for all joints
within the height range (defined as global Y-range) of 11 ft. - 13 ft.
The second EXPOSURE specification specifies the exposure factor
as 0.85 for joints 17, 20 and 22. Note that in the EXPOSURE
FACTOR specification, the joints may be specified directly or
through a vertical range specification.
This is the second stage of input specification for the wind load
generation. The WIND LOAD command is used to specify the
WIND LOADING in a particular lateral direction. In this case,
WIND loading TYPE 1, defined previously, is being applied in the
global X-direction with a positive multiplying factor of 1.2 .
The program will identify all members lying within the specified
area and distribute the applied loading as MEMBER LOADS on
these members based on two-way load distribution. The PRINT
LOAD DATA command used with PERFORM ANALYSIS
specification below will generate a listing of the MEMBER
LOADings resulting out of the FLOOR LOAD distribution.

parts. In the first line, the section-name is provided. The user is
allowed to provide any section name within seven characters. The
second line contains the section properties required for the
particular section-type. Each section-type requires a certain number
of data (area of cross-section, depth, moment of inertias etc.)
provided in a certain order. For example, in this case, for wide
flanges ten different properties are required. For detailed
information on the various properties required for the different
section-types and their order of specification, refer to Section 5.19
in the STAAD/Pro Technical Reference Manual. Note that all
required properties for the particular section-type must be
provided.

STAAD PLANE
*EXAMPLE FOR COMPRESSION-ONLY MEMBERS
Every STAAD input file has to begin with the word STAAD. The
word PLANE signifies that the structure is a plane frame and the
geometry is defined through X and Y axes. The remainder of the
words form a title to identify this project.
The units for the data that follows are specified above.
SET NL 2
JOINT COORDINATES
1 0 0 ; 2 0 10 ; 3 0 20 ; 4 15 20 ; 5 15 10 ; 6 15 0
MEMBER INCIDENCES

6 1 5 ; 7 2 6 ; 8 2 4 ; 9 3 5 ; 10 2 5
The members are defined by the joints they are connected to.

The above data describe a static load case. Joint loads are applied
in the positive global X direction at joints 2 and 3.
PERFORM ANALYSIS
CHANGE
During the process of the above analysis, some of the members may
have been inactivated as a result of them being subjected to tensile
forces. These members now have to be re-activated for any further
processes. This is done with the help of the CHANGE command.

PERFORM ANALYSIS
CHANGE
At the end of any analysis, only those load cases for which the
analysis was done most recently, are recognized as the "active"
load cases. The LOAD LIST ALL command enables all the load
cases in the structure to be made active for further processing.
