Ab1202 - Statistics and Analysis Tutorial: 1 Topics: Probability Measures

This document contains a tutorial on probability measures and statistics. It provides examples and problems involving sample spaces, events, unions and intersections of events, and probabilities. Specifically, it asks students to: 1) Define sample spaces and events from given experiments and determine if sample spaces are simple. 2) Identify sample spaces for experiments like coin flips, dice rolls, and measuring car lifetimes. 3) Express events using set notation, like the occurrence of at least one, two, or all of three events. 4) Describe events from selecting cards or numbers in terms of the subsets they belong to. 5) Calculate probabilities of events occurring from experiments like coin tosses and dice rolls.

AB1202 – STATISTICS AND ANALYSIS

Tutorial :1
Topics : Probability Measures

1. Work with your classmates to define a sample space and events from the sample space.
Is this sample space is a simple space? Give some examples of the unions and
intersections of these events.

2. What is the sample space in the following experiments?

(1) The experiment of flipping two coins.
(2) The experiment of rolling two dice.
(3) The experiment of measuring the lifetime of a car.

3. A box contains three marbles: one yellow, one red, and one blue. Consider an
experiment that consists of taking one marble from the box then replacing it in the box
and drawing a second marble from the box. Each marble is equally likely to be selected.
(1) What is the sample space?
(2) What is the probability of each point in the sample space?

4. Let A, B, C be three events. Express the following events by set notion

(1) At least one of the three event occurs.
(2) At least two of the three events occur.
(3) All three events occur.

5. Suppose that one card is to be selected from a deck of 20 cards that contains 10 blue
cards (numbered from 1 to 10) and 10 green cards (numbered from 1 to 10).
Let A be the event that a card with an even number is selected, let B be the event that a
green card is selected, and let C be the event that a card with a number less than 5 is
selected. Describe the sample space S and describe each of the following events in
words:
(1) A ∩ B∩ C
(2) A ∪ B ∪ C
(3) A ∩( B ∪ C)

6. Suppose that a number x is to be selected from the real line S, and let A,B and C be the
events represented by the following subsets of S, where the notation {x:---}denoted the
set containing every point x for which the property presented following the colon is
satisfied:
A={ x :−2 ≤ x ≤ 5 }
B= { x :4 ≤ x ≤ 7 }
C={ x : x ≤ 0 }

Describe each of the following events as a set of real numbers:

(1) A ∪ B
(2) ( A ∩ B)∩C

7. Consider an experiment in which a fair coin is tossed once and a balanced die is rolled
once.

(1) Describe the sample space for this experiment.

(2) What is the probability that a Tail on the coin and an even number on the die?

8. Suppose each of three persons tosses a coin. If the outcome of one of the tosses differs
from the other outcomes, then the game ends. If not, then the persons start over and re-
toss their coins.

(1) Assuming fair coins, what is the probability that the game will end with the first
round of tosses?

(2) If all three coins are biased and have probability 0.25 of landing heads, what is the
probability that the game will end at the first round?
