Impact of Social Media in Education
Impact of Social Media in Education
Part 1
Today I am going to give a seminar on an interesting topic i.e, impact of social media on
education.
First of all I think there is nobody here who is unaware of what social media is. To
simplify it further, social media is nothing but facebook, whatsapp, twitter, linkedin and
so on. As we all know it connects people irrespective of distance.
Even though social media like fb, wapp is used by people of all age groups, it is popular
among youths and students. According to the many academic researchers, social media is
deteriorating agent for students. They consider it is a deviation from studies and it
reduces the quality time of students.
According to survey, an average student spends 72 hours/ week on social media.
That’s why we get scolding’s from our parents and teachers when we use social media
continuously.
Apart from the negative impacts of social media on youth, there are so many positive
impacts too. Since it is mostly used by students and youth, so many researchers feel that
it can be used to improve the quality of education.
Is it possible? If so how? Let us see some of the positive impacts of social media on
education.
Part 2
As we all know, this is the era of smart phones and social media. If u are not on any
one of the social medias like fb, wasp, insta people will treat you like a stranger or
odd man out.
Anyhow students are quite familiar with social media websites and by the by teachers
does not fall back in using the social media websites.
Hence social media can be used effectively to share information between the teachers
and students and also it improves the connectivity between teachers and students.
Part 3
Now I am going to explain the positive impact of social media on education more precisely with
some instances.
Live lectures – now a days so many lecturers are conducting classes online using fb,
twitter , skype. On the whole, it makes the whole process easier to both lecturers and
students. Students can sit in their homes and can get access to whatever information they
want so easily, at any preferred time. And also even if we sleep in the middle of the class,
no one cares. Please don’t take it seriously.
Increased support – Since we are in touch with social media continuously, teachers can
solve the queries of students so easily at any time. If a student gets a doubt, he or she can
clear it so easily with the help of social media.
Easy work - It makes the work easier for both teachers and students. It also helps the
teacher to expand and explore their own possibilities//skills// and knowledge.
More disciplined: The classes conducted on social media platforms are more disciplined
and structured as we know that everyone is watching.
Teaching aids - Social media can help the students to nourish their knowledge with a lot
of teaching aids available online. Students can watch videos, see images, check out
reviews and instantly clear their doubt. Not only students, even teacher can make their
lectures more interesting by using these tools and teaching aids.
Teaching Blogs and write ups - Students can enhance their knowledge by reading blogs,
articles and write ups by renowned teachers, professors and thinkers. This way good
content can reach wide audience.
Part 4
Conclusion
As we all know, everything has its own positive and negative sides. If social media is used
wisely, it will definitely have a greater impact on students and education system. There is one
famous saying; ‘we should always go with the flow’. Since we have so many useful
technologies, if we blend it properly with our learning process; it makes the whole process easier
and more effective. If so, why can’t we just make use of it and better our lives?
