FRP Repair Procedure: Notes

This document provides instructions for repairing fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) using gelcoat or resin. The procedure involves sanding the repair area, cleaning it, testing gel time for the resin and catalyst mixture, applying layers of mat and veil using the proper mixture, rolling out air bubbles, allowing it to cure, and finishing by sanding or applying gelcoat. Notes emphasize properly mixing catalyst into materials, keeping things dry to prevent leaks, and fully saturating fiberglass layers.

FRP REPAIR PROCEDURE

 SAND AREA TO BE GLASSED USING 36 – 80 GRIT SAND PAPER. SAND AREA 1” WIDER
THAN GLASS WIDTH. IF AREA IS NOT SANDED WELL THE MATERIALS WILL NOT BOND.
 CLEAN AREA TO BE WELDED FROM ALL DUST AND DEBRIS.
 GEL TIME TEST IS RECOMMENDED TO INSURE ENOUGH WORKING TIME IS ALLOWED.
ADJUST CATALYST (MEKP) LEVELS ACCORDINGLY. CATALYST TO RESIN CHART INCLUDED.
 POUR UP DESIRED AMOUNT OF RESIN TO BE USED AT THIS TIME. MIX RESIN AND
CATALYST (MEKP) AT NO LOWER THAN 2% RECOMMENDED FOR PROPER CURE.
 APPLY SEAL WELD (2 LAYERS 1.5 oz MAT). ALLOW TO GEL BEFORE MOVING TO NEXT
STEP. THIS WILL INSURE A COMPLETE SEAL.
 WET OUT FRP MARERIAL:
A. IF USING FABMAT; APPLY IN ORDER OF NARROW TO WIDEST LAYERS. COVER
FABMAT WITH LAYER OF 1.5 oz. MAT AND VEIL.
B. IF USING MAT AND WOVEN GLASS: APPLY IN ORDER OF NARROW TO WIDEST
LAYERS ALTERNATING LAYERS OF MAT AND WOVEN. COVER WITH VEIL.
 ROLL AIR OUT OF WELD USING ROLLER.
 WIPE RUNS TO PREVENT EXTRA DETAIL WORK
 ALLOW WELD TO CURE. (IF COLD, A HEAT GUN OR LAMP MAY BE USED TO SPEED UP
CURING AFTER WELD IS ROLLED)
 SAND TO DESIRED FINISH.
 GELCOAT OR WAX COAT REPAIRED AREA USING SAME CATALYST LEVELS AS RESIN
MIXTURE.

NOTES
1. MAKE SURE CATALYST IS MIXED WELL INTO RESIN AND GELCOAT.
2. KEEP MATERIALS DRY.
3. FRP MATERIAL SHALL BE COMPLETELY SATURATED. DRY MATERIAL CAN CAUSE
PINHOLE LEAKS. CONTINUE TO MONITOR WELD UNTILL IT HAS CURED. IF RESIN
DRAINS, CONTINUE TO ROLL TO PREVENT PINHOLES
4. Color is RAL7038
5. IF ONLY GELCOAT REPAIR IS REQUIRED, FOLLOW HIGHLIGHTED INSTRUCTIONS
ONLY.
