Lecture 1&2 Probability &statistics PDF

This document is the transcript of a lecture on introductory statistics presented by Muhammad Imran. The lecture covers fundamental elements of statistics including definitions of data, primary and secondary data, cross-sectional and time series data, grouped and ungrouped data, constants, and populations and samples. It provides examples to illustrate concepts like cross-sectional versus time series data and primary versus secondary data. The lecture aims to introduce basic but important concepts in statistics to students of computer science.

Statistics in Decision Making
Every day we make decisions that may be personal,
business related, or of some other kind. Usually
these decisions are made under conditions of
uncertainty. Many times, the situations or problems
we face in the real world have no precise or definite
solution.
Decisions made by using statistical methods are
called educated guesses where as decisions made
without using statistical methods are called pure
guesses. For example , opening a large store in an
area with or without assessing the need for it may
affect its success.

Data: Raw facts and figures are called data.
Statistical Data: The set of observations related to the experiment
is called statistical data.

Fundamental Elements of Statistics
Primary Data: Data that have been originally collected (first time) and
have not undergone any statistical treatment is called primary data.
Sources of primary data are personal investigation through observation,
questionnaire, local sources and telephone.
Secondary Data: Data which has already been collected by some one
and which have passed through the statistical process at least once.
Sources of secondary data are government organization, semi
government organization, teaching & research organizations, research
journals, newspapers and internet.
Cross Sectional Data: Data collected on different elements at the
same point in time or for the same period of time.
Time Series Data: Data that give the values of the same variable for
the same element at different values for different elements.
Pooled Data: In pooled , or combined, data are elements of both time
series and cross sectional data.
