Chapter 4: Documentation
Mechanical

The documentation erroneously states the participation factor is not output when the modal analysis
is for a downstream mode-superposition cyclic harmonic analysis (CYCOPT,MSUP,1). This is no longer
true. In the solution output, the participation factors and modal mass are listed. The participation factors
are only output for harmonic index 0 (and only for UZ and ROTZ in the cyclic coordinate system) and
for harmonic index 1 (and only for UX, UY, ROTX, and ROTY in the cyclic coordinate system). They are
multiplied by sqrt(N) for harmonic index 0 and sqrt(N/2) for harmonic index 1 so that they match the
participation factors from a full 360 degree model. The modal mass is N/2 (or N if the harmonic index
is 0 or N/2). If the modes have been normalized to unity (Nrmkey= ON on the MODOPT command),
then the participation factors and modal mass will also be scaled based on that mode's normalization
factor.

The .MODE file header now includes the ptrSCL record, which is the pointer to the cyclic mode scale
factors (if scaled to unity, Nrmkey = ON on modopt). This is not documented in the Programmer's Guide.

Chapter 5: ANSYS Structural Products
5.1. Mechanical
See the Documentation (p. 7) section of this document for items specific to the ANSYS AIM Document.

When using the additional command line option -machines for an Explicit Dynamics simulation, the
maximum number of cores available is limited to the number of cores on the local machine. The ANSYS
RSM Cluster (ARC) can be used to distribute an Explicit Dynamics simulation across multiple machines;
refer to the RSM documentation for further information. (136682)

The beta option on Linux for Mechanical Explicit Dynamics is not passed to the solver and as such has
no effect for solver related beta functionality. (136686)

Specific to Linear Dynamics, multiple base excitations (Displacement or Acceleration) should have same
Absolute Result Setting, either Yes or No; but instead erroneously allow a solve with mixed settings,
which has no physical meaning. (140565)

Multibody parts with a combination of solid and shell bodies are not supported by the Rigid Body Dy-
namics and Explicit Dynamics solvers. (141702)

Specific to Topology Optimization analysis, if a Layered section is present in the analysis and is included
in the scoping of Topology Density and Topology Elemental Density result, then the Original Mass, Final
Mass and Percent Mass to Original computation shown in the details view will be incorrect. (141866)

If the user has more than one Mechanical system that share a Mechanical Model via Project Schematic
links, and if the user while solving one of the systems navigates to objects in another system in the
Mechanical window, then evaluated results in the second system can lose their graphics and internal
data. Any post operations that rely on this internal data, such as result export, will not succeed thereafter.
Work-around: To avoid this the user is advised to stay within the system that is solving. If the user
does get into the aforementioned situation, they are advised to save the project to avoid any potential
loss of data, and then clean and re-evaluate the results to restore their graphics and internal data.
(142396)

5.2. Mechanical APDL

The distributed memory parallel (DMP) version of Mechanical APDL (i.e., Distributed ANSYS) now requires
the use of v7.1 when using MSMPI. This version of MSMPI is incompatible with older versions of Windows
Server, such as Windows HPC Server 2008. Therefore, Distributed ANSYS no longer supports Windows
HPC Server 2008 R2 when using MSMPI. Users can still run Distributed ANSYS using Intel MPI or IBM
Platform MPI using multiple cores on a single machine with Windows HPC Server 2008. (139387)

The new domain decomposition method for cyclic modal analyses (DDOPT,CYCHI), requires the global
.esav file, and in some circumstances the global .emat file, to be available if the modal analysis includes
prestress effects. Therefore, users cannot use the DMPOPT,ESAV,NO command, or the DMPOPT,EMAT,NO
command, in the preceding static prestress analysis to avoid combining the local .esav and .emat files.

5.3. Autodyn
The stochastic factor distribution in elements in a model filled with a material model including
stochastic failure may change when the model is run in one release compared to when it is run in a
later release, even if the distribution type is set to Fixed. (136273)

5.4. Aqwa
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

5.5. ANSYS Composite PrepPost (ACP)

No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

Chapter 6: ANSYS Fluids Products
6.1. Fluent
When run in parallel, DDPM simulations may produce inaccurate particle tracking results. Once the
dispersed phase volume fraction exceeds the packing limit in partition boundary cells, Fluent will correctly
use the Eulerian multiphase solver treatment for the calculation of the dispersed phase velocity along
those boundaries. However, when the dispersed phase volume fraction falls below the packing limit,
Fluent will incorrectly continue to use the Eulerian approach instead of returning to using the Lagrangian
approach. Work-around: A user-defined function (UDF) is available on the ANSYS Customer Portal. Go
to Knowledge Resources > Solution, enter UDF for Fluent R18.0 Parallel DDPM accuracy into the Search
Solutions field, download the UDF, compile it, and hook it as an ADJUST function and an EX-
ECUTE_AT_END function. The Solution ID is 2045725. (103884)

When the Use DPM Domain option is enabled, any particles crossing non-conformal interfaces will cause
the simulation to terminate abnormally. If particles are expected to cross non-conformal interfaces, the
Use DPM Domain option should not be used. (140129)

In "ABAQUS", "NASTRAN", "Mechanical APDL Input", "I-deas Universal", and "PATRAN" formats, surface
export of the temperature and heat transfer coefficient from periodic boundaries will lead to an abnormal
termination. The same is true for a domain export of the heat transfer coefficient for cases containing
periodic boundaries in these formats (note that domain export of temperature is possible for such
cases). (141487)

If you import a legacy case containing multiple monitors plotting in the same window, you must review
the setup to ensure each report plot is assigned to a different window before running the calculation.
If the plot windows are not reassigned, then plots assigned to the same window will be lost. (141159)

Fluent allows you to create contour, vector, mesh, pathline, particle track, xy plot, and scene graphics
objects with spaces in the name. The text command "display/objects/display" will print an error and
fail to display graphics objects containing a space in the name. Work-around: create graphics objects
without spaces in the nameor use the graphical user interface to display graphics objects with spaces
in the name. (141652)

Output parameters cannot be created using the text command "define/parameters/output-paramet-

ers/create/report-definition". Using this text command prints an error and creates an invalid output
parameter. Work-around: Use the graphical user interface to create output parameters. (141728)

Version 18.0 will require approximately 60 MB more memory per node process compared to version
17.0 and later. (141738)

The Monte Carlo radiation model does not provide radiation flux values for coupled two-sided walls
that have a semi-transparent boundary condition. (141992)

Performance on Linux with Intel SkyLake processor will not be optimal if the Intel MPI is selected as
the MPI choice for Fluent, due to an error in the Intel MPI version included in version 18.0. Work-around:
Include the following command line option when starting Fluent: -mpiopt="-genv I_MPI_INTRAN-
ODE_EAGER_THRESHOLD=8". (142152)

ANSYS Fluids Products

Specific to Linux, using the right-click probe on contour or vector objects may result in a fatal signal.
Note that the session remains responsive and you can continue to work in it. Work-around: Use the
non-persistent version of the dialog box (Ribbon--> Postprocessing/Graphics/[Contours or Vectors]/Edit...)
to display the contour or vector before using the right-click probe. (142498)

6.2. CFX
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

6.3. TurboGrid
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

6.4. BladeModeler
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

6.5. CFD-Post
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

6.6. Polyflow
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

6.7. Forte
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

6.8. Chemkin-Pro
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

6.9. FENSAP-ICE
In the Graphs panel of a CHT3D simulation, the x- and y-axis labels display incorrectly. The labels display
as "Solid min. temperature (K)" and "iterations", even when a different plot is selected. Furthermore, if
automatic time stepping is used for the CHT3D simulation, incorrect values for iteration number will
be plotted on the x-axis. Both of these are only display issues, and neither affects the actual solutions.

Furthermore, when CHT3D simulations are performed in anti-icing mode, the Parameters tab of the
CHT3D main config should contain the 'Solution output every X time steps' in the Run parameters section.
However, a graphics interface issue with release R18.0 causes 'Solution output every X seconds' to display
instead, which is an option that should be used only when CHT3D simulations are performed in de-
icing mode. Because of this issue, it is not possible to output and save the solution at specified iteration
intervals when the anti-icing mode is used, which could be useful for investigating the convergence or
divergence behavior of a simulation. (142077)

When ICE3D runs with a translational periodic grid, the mass and energy balances are solved only on
one periodic side of the grid. Currently, ICE3D prints values that correspond to half of the true geometry
inside the energy and mass conservation tables of the log output. Therefore, when extracting these
tabled data, you should double them. (142384)

12 of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
FENSAP-ICE

During a CHT3D simulation, if the solid grid is rotational periodic, setting interfaces with the Nothing
boundary condition will terminate the run in the first iteration. In such cases, the boundary condition
of the interfaces should be set to Mixed. Reference temperature and heat coefficient can be kept to
their default values. Tutorial 7.4 illustrates this setting. (142431)

ADAPT-FENSAP sequences are writing timebc.dat.fensap.XXXXXX type files based on the initial mesh
for all shots. This pollutes the solution of subsequent shots. The timebc files list velocities for the inlet
boundary conditions. When these node IDs fall on walls later on, the free stream velocity gets stuck on
non-slip walls. (142450)

Chapter 7: ANSYS Electronics Products
7.1. Icepak
For Icepak to run, the computer must run Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and/or Windows 10, and Microsoft
Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (x64) redistributable files must be installed. If the computer contains
no prior installation of ANSYS Workbench or Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, you must install Microsoft
Visual Studio 2008 (x64) SP1 redistributable files. (141033)

For Gerber file import to function, Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (x86) redistributables
must be installed. (141131)

For transient solutions, surface monitor data is not displayed. (142281)

Chapter 8: ANSYS Geometry & Mesh Prep Products
8.1. CAD Connections & Integration
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

8.2. DesignModeler
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

8.3. SpaceClaim
Because of a significant defect documented in Microsoft's KB3065367, any Windows system running
.NET Framework 4.6.0 should be updated to .NET Framework 4.6.1 prior to running ANSYS SpaceClaim
Direct Modeler. (126062)

When Creating a Keyshot model from within SpaceClaim with the top view direction set to Y, the res-
ulting model in Keyshot may not be centered in the Keyshot window. Work-around: Change the top
view direction to Z(SpaceClaim Default) in SpaceClaim Options Advanced Behavior. (141123)

When importing ECAD files (IPC-2581) in locales that use commas as separators, the files may import
distorted. Work-around: Change your computer locale to English (or any other locale that uses periods
as separators) to import the files. (141640)

Merge faces for a specific model incorrectly changes volume. The known relative accuracy reported by
mass properties may be incorrect in some very specific cases. (TFS38459)

Difference in mass properties values when a part is split versus when the part is whole. The known rel-
ative accuracy reported by mass properties may be incorrect in some very specific cases.(TFS41434)

When importing ascii TGF files in locales that use commas, the file may not import. Work-around:

1. Change your Control Panel Region and Language Format setting to "English US" (no reboot required).

2. When saving as TGF files to be opened in SpaceClaim, save the files as binary files.

(TFS45690)

The Repair Fit Curves Maximum Distance slider tool does not work. Workaround: Manually enter a
maximum distance value. (TFS45712)

8.4. Meshing
For mixed solid/shell parts, a Face Meshing control cannot be scoped to a sheet face if the face is adjacent
to a solid body. In cases like this, the meshing of the sheet face will fail. (135779)

In ANSYS 18.0, the Quad Dominant method gives priority to mesh size over capturing geometry features
like corner vertices. This might lead to partially connected mesh at certain locations after generating

Release 18.0 - © SAS IP, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 17
ANSYS Geometry & Mesh Prep Products

mesh connections. One must carefully investigate the connected mesh to ensure that mesh is properly
connected. Work-around:To avoid such situations, one can define the topologies involved in mesh
connections as protected by creating Named Selections on them. (139770)

8.5. IC Engine
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

8.6. ICEM CFD

No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

8.7. Fluent Meshing

Shrink-wrapping and octree-hexcore meshing may report a sigsegv error when the ratio of global max
size to global min size exceeds 2^20. Increase the global min size to avoid the issue. (141868)

In parallel mode, after the mesh is distributed, then the graphics toolbars are not supported. However,
some of the toolbar icons and corresponding hotkeys appear to be active and will crash if used. (142139)

Release 18.0 - © SAS IP, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
18 of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
Chapter 9: ANSYS Simulation Products
9.1. Workbench
Entries in the Design Points table are sorted by Name by default. Work-around: Right-click anywhere
in the table and select Show Update Order. Sort by Update Order in Ascending order. (141521)

System Coupling
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

9.2. ANSYS ACT

No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

9.3. Remote Solve Manager (RSM)

When using the 'My Computer, Background' solve process setting on Linux, a solve job will fail if the
project folder contains a space. Removing the space from the folder name resolves this issue. (142214)

Attempting to delete a large number of jobs from an RSM job monitor may cause the monitor to become
unresponsive for a period of time. (142445)

9.4. EKM
If you get an error message in Step 3/3: Specify Execution Settings of the batch job wizard, then correct
the error (for example, by selecting another queue) and click Finish, the job will begin to run, but the
job status will be incorrectly reported as 'Failed'. To avoid this issue, close the wizard and start over
when you see an error message. (141783)

If you cancel a job that is executing, and then submit and execute another batch job that uses the same
working directory, selecting the cancelled job in the Job Monitor displays the monitors of the newly
executed job instead of the cancelled job. Normally, monitors are not displayed for cancelled jobs.
(141859)

When EKM is configured to use a cache server, the cache server is not used when a Workbench user
downloads files or gets changes from the EKM repository. Instead, data will come from the main EKM
server, which may result in slower performance. (142080)

When a Fluent job running on Windows is interrupted from EKM, the job status may be incorrectly re-
ported as 'Failed' even though the job exits cleanly after saving the latest case and data files. (142090)

In some cases, when a file upload to EKM uses multiple threads, metadata extraction may fail. If this
occurs you can go to Data > Extraction Monitor and perform the extraction manually. (142094)

If you copy and paste the URL of a running job into a new browser tab or window, the EKM server may
crash. To open a new window from EKM, you should use the More > Open in new window action in

ANSYS Simulation Products

the Data section. Otherwise, if you open a new tab using the browser, you should enter the URL of the
EKM server on that tab instead of pasting in the URL of a running job. (142182)

9.5. DesignXplorer
No known issues, limitations, or documentation inaccuracies.

Chapter 10: ANSYS AIM
See the Documentation (p. 7) section of this document for items specific to the ANSYS AIM Document.

If a fluid flow template is used twice in a single AIM session, then the 'Swirling Flow' option will not
have any effect in the second simulation. Work-around: Set the 'Curvature correction' option directly
in the Physics options > Turbulence Model > RANS Model section. (139891)

Expressions using variables that involve conversion between total and static conditions, such as total
temperature, may fail in certain situations. (140102)

AIM may crash when exporting design points from the Table of Design Points in Workbench. Work-
around: Export design points directly from the AIM interface (not through Workbench). (140699)

Tabular data for material properties requires that at least two rows are specified. When only a single
data point is known, this limitation can be worked around by either using constant value option, or by
adding a second data point to the table with same y-value and different x-value than the first point.
(141274)

If a material is used in more than one Material Assignment, with a different material model (ideal gas
vs. constant properties), then this will result in an error. If one is deleted, this will not correctly set the
material properties in the solver. Work-around: After deleting a shared material assignment, toggle
the material model option. (141289)

Occasionally with a fluids project, AIM may become unresponsive (hang) when monitoring a calculated
value result using a chart. Work-around: Avoid using a chart to monitor a calculated value when
working with fluids.(141440)

Modifications to frequency dependent material properties will have no effect after actions such as:
generate conduction paths, generate initial mesh, update physics and results. (141604)

The material properties of the Liquid Hydrogen library material are incorrect. The properties are for a
reference temperature of 20.689K rather than 203.69K. (141935)

When a project includes more than one physics task: If a material used in the magnetics physics task
was originally defined in another physics task, edits to this material will NOT affect the magnetics
physics setup and/or solution. Work-around: After modifying a material property, toggle a physics
setting before updating the task. (141971)

At a fluid-solid (CHT) interface, if the fluid region is set up on 'side 2' of the interface, the heat flow
through the interface does not properly account for the effect of turbulence, potentially resulting in
solution errors in the temperature field. The error should decrease as the mesh is refined (eg, using in-
