Causatives

These kinds of sentences are used to ask for somebody’s help or make someone to do
something for you:
Special verbs:
 Let → Permission → Nancy let her grandchildren play in the garden. (Present)
 Get → Convince → Reynaldo got her grandmother to buy a new bike for him. (Past)
 Have → Instructions → Nancy will have her daughter print on T-shirts. (Future)
 Make → Obligation → Nancy have made her husband take care of the dog. (Present perfect)

Examples: Read and complete with the correct causative verb:


a) Hey, Nancy! Tell me about your new laptop, I’ve heard you bought it recently in Ripley.
b) It has many resources but I have a problem with the speakers and microphone.
a) I think you should _______ Ripley ______________ this product for a new one. (Change)

a) I am very excited about the Nancy’s birthday party but my mother doesn’t ________ me ________ to her house (Go)

a) I am very busy these days because being a teacher and mother at the same time is not easy.

a) I had an accident and I broke my hand that’s why I cannot cook. I will ____________ my husband ____________ this
week. (cook)

Passive Causative
These kinds of sentences are used to show that you get a service
These kinds of sentences need GET or HAVE + “Past participle verbs”
Examples:
 My brother is having / getting his car fixed by the mechanic. (Present continuous)
 My brother had / got his car fixed by the mechanic. (Past)
 My brother will have / get his car fixed by the mechanic. (Future)
