Research Shows That Young People Today Are Not As Healthy As They Were Twenty Years Ago. Why Is This and Can We Do Anything About It?

Young people today are less healthy than 20 years ago for several reasons. First, young people are becoming more sedentary as exercising and playing sports has decreased in popularity. Second, diets have changed with more consumption of junk and fast foods which are high in fat and sugar but lack nutrients. However, encouraging more affordable exercise options and improving diets with less junk food and more fruits and vegetables could help make young people healthier.

Part 1 Essay

In your English class you have been doing a project on young people and their health in
your country. Now your teacher has asked you to write an essay.
Write an essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view.

Research shows that young people today are not as healthy as they were
twenty years ago. Why is this and can we do anything about it?
Notes
Write about:
 the degree to which young people are active
 the effect of diet on health
 ................ (your own idea)

Write your essay for your teacher (around 140-190 words

Ideas for writing
 Ask yourself the following questions to help you get started:
What evidence do you have that young people aren't as healthy? List some points to support the
newspaper statement.
e.g. young people are getting heavier; doing sport is less popular
 What reasons can you think of? Try to think of at least three.
e.g. less time to exercise; too much junk food; use of machines to do everyday jobs; some sports are
expensive
 What suggestions would you make to improve the situation? Make a list of at least two
ideas.
e.g. encourage people to do cheap forms of exercise and improve their diet

Decide how many paragraphs you are going to have (not more than three or four).
Drafting and proofreading your work
You should look at your first draft of the task and decide:
Have you responded to the statement and the notes appropriately?
Is the composition organised in a clear and logical way?
Is the language accurate with a good range of structures?
Will your teacher enjoy reading your essay?
Is the style OK?
If the answer is 'no' to any of these questions then you will need to do some more drafting!
Content
Should include a discussion of the statement and give reasons why. Should have a paragraph giving
own view and suggestions or recommendations.
Communicative achievement
Semi-formal. The teacher would be informed about your viewpoint.
Organisation
3 - 4 paragraphs. The points in the main body of the essay should be in a logical order, i.e. activity
in one, diet in the next paragraph. The final paragraph should give own view and any
recommendations.
Language
Language of opinion, argument ('One reason for the change may be due to ....') comparison
('Compared to 20 years ago, the situation now....') and suggestion. Vocabulary relating to health
and fitness (exercise, diet, fit/unfit, lifestyle, lazy). Should not contain major errors that lead to
misunderstandings or that irritate the reader.

Young people are getting heavier and heavier every generation. Their laziness is
increasing more and more.
For that, they only have to blame themselves. Doing exercises or sports doesn’t take that much
time, it all depends if whether someone is ready to put some effort into it or not. One more reason
for the unhealthy weights of young people is the many junk and fast food restaurants. Everyone
knows that junk foods have no or little nutritional value and due to the irrespective of the way they
are marketed, they are not healthy to consume. Most of them are high in saturated fats and
sugar components.
It’s very unwholesome for the teenagers to be on a diet, because for their maturing
organisms are needed lots of healthy food, so the best decision is eating less junk or fast
food and more fruits and vegetables. Also, going regularly outside for walks or riding a bike
will result in having a more fit body.
